SPOILER ALERT:

I loved the series and almost wish there was more to it. I thought about certain things that happen and realize that while they're not what I want, they're what the story needed. Its the zombie apocalypse and a survival story.

A lot of things happen abruptly and seemingly for no reason. We follow this character for however long and they face a horrible and tragic end. It sucks but thats what happens in real life. There are not always answers to all questions. Situations will often be left unresolved. Not because of bad writing. Just realism.

One of my only problems is the amount of times certain words, phrases, or ideas are repeated. I understand that it is 12 whole books but hearing that a thing isn't expected in the zombie apocalypse or that the characters want to live not just survive was kind of annoying.

Another thing (and this is very much nitpicking) is that there were some characters that seemed to be disregarded completely. Given they were some times minor characters. Maybe most times.

This isn't a bad thing, but...

LOT OF MAIN CHARACTERS DIE.

Slight spoiler

I liked this book a lot. It kept me awake during my shift. I liked the characters for the most part. And I like superheroes as well as competition.

My main problem with the story has to do with how fast things seem to move and then slow down abruptly only to practically skip through a few minutes later. I wouldn’t have minded more detail.

Another problem is the way the characters speak is all the same. They all sound the same as the narrator as far as the wording goes. These are kids from all over the world. However, they all say things in the same way. Whatever self esteem and confidence Tristan gains shouldn’t completely change how he thinks and speaks. Only how he acts. Also there’s a lot of time I spent thinking “who speaks like that?” Or “why even add that extra word to the sentence?”

My last problem is the sudden blow up at the end. Underdog main characters are fun because they can advance faster than their peers and end up being stronger. He was a weak kid who got bullied and was too scared to try anything. But to just suddenly end up being completely overpowered is honestly not too great storytelling. He just instantly knows what to do when he gets his powers. Not difficult at all taking out this group of assassins that are so scary, with his new found power.

Overall I’m sorry that this sounds so negative. I liked the book and the narrator is decent though I forgot this was about a kid from Florida a couple times. And there’s a lot of redundancy. I still listened all the way through and I plan on getting the second book.

I'm late but I loved this. First book I read/listened to by him was Alive. That had me hooked. Then I heard about the podcast and binged what I could. Then I bought a few of these books and I couldn't get enough. Big plus that I like playing and watching football.
