What an unexpected pleasure
Revisado: 02-12-25
I don’t put much faith in the written reviews. Too many people whose tastes don’t agree with mine. I’m glad my wife introduced me to this story. Not too heavy. Exciting. Sometimes humorous. Good to listen to when dealing with the stress of driving to/from work.

Historia
Olive Torres is used to being the unlucky twin: from inexplicable mishaps to a recent layoff, her life seems to be almost comically jinxed. By contrast, her sister Ami is an eternal champion...she even managed to finance her entire wedding by winning a slew of contests. Unfortunately for Olive, the only thing worse than constant bad luck is having to spend the wedding day with the best man (and her nemesis), Ethan Thomas.

This should be classified as a Harlequin substitute, not humor.
Revisado: 01-26-25
I chose it because Audible categorized it as humorous. It’s a Harlequin substitute. I don’t usually give up on a story, even if I don’t care for it, because I want to see how it ends. “The Heaven and Earth Grocery Store” is an example. But the end seemed so obvious, I didn’t care to.

The Earth teems with sights and textures, sounds and vibrations, smells and tastes, electric and magnetic fields. But every kind of animal, including humans, is enclosed within its own unique sensory bubble, perceiving but a tiny sliver of our immense world. In An Immense World, Ed Yong coaxes us beyond the confines of our own senses, allowing us to perceive the skeins of scent, waves of electromagnetism, and pulses of pressure that surround us.

Fabulously written
Revisado: 11-17-22
Mr. Yong delves into subjects that are worth exploring. The myriad of ways that life on the planet senses the world is fascinating. The book ends with stark images but with hope. It is clearly not for everyone but, if you have a curious mind, consider it. You can listen to his interview on Fresh Air first before listening to his book.

Historia
The story begins in 1962. On a rocky patch of the sun-drenched Italian coastline, a young innkeeper, chest-deep in daydreams, looks out over the incandescent waters of the Ligurian Sea and spies an apparition: a tall, thin woman, a vision in white, approaching him on a boat. She is an actress, he soon learns, an American starlet, and she is dying. And the story begins again today, half a world away, when an elderly Italian man shows up on a movie studio's back lot - searching for the mysterious woman he last saw at his hotel decades earlier.

Couldn’t take it anymore.

I enjoyed the narration but I couldn’t take the story anymore. Couldn’t finish it. Too much concentration on the negative personas in society.

Thoroughly enjoyed it.
Revisado: 05-10-22
Several family members thoroughly enjoyed it. We’re grateful that Dr. Reisman took the time to educate and/or remind us in layman’s language of parts of the human body and its functions. I would eagerly read a follow up.
