Historia
Beneath Candice Kumai’s polished image as a wellness icon, she was tormented by anxiety, competitiveness and deep inner suffering. It wasn’t until she re-embraced the Buddhist principles she’d been taught in childhood that she began to change her life for the better—even making a pilgrimage to her mother’s home country of Japan to study in the mountains with Buddhist monks. Full of wisdom and raw honesty, Spirited recounts her journey and shares the Buddhist practices that transformed her life so you can, too.

Surface Level, Unoriginal, and Terrible Acting
Revisado: 05-05-23
The author makes herself out to be as someone who has been through significant hardships and wants to share how she's pulled through by her spiritual practices. However, her "deep dark secrets" appear really surface level. At the beginning, she "cries" when saying she's going to share dark things she's been through before she immediately stops crying. It came off as very fake. Afterwards, she confesses that her hardship was that she was in a relationship with a drug addict (the only note being she tried to give him professional support) and that her parents didn't want her going to Japan because she loved to party as a young adult. If these were her only problems, she lived a pretty good life. Her insistence that she's been through hard times too comes off as condescending to anyone who hasn't lived a life full of privilege.
Her voice comes off as "corporate" and she has a habit of repeating herself over and over and over again. Let's not forget that's she's regular contributor to Goop 🤦🏽♂️
If you're looking for actual spirituality and not someone shilling out as the "Golden Girl of Wellness," look elsewhere.

Historia
For David Goggins, childhood was a nightmare--poverty, prejudice, and physical abuse colored his days and haunted his nights. But through self-discipline, mental toughness, and hard work, Goggins transformed himself from a depressed, overweight young man with no future into a US Armed Forces icon and one of the world's top endurance athletes. The only man in history to complete elite training as a Navy SEAL, Army Ranger, and Air Force tactical air controller, he went on to set records in numerous endurance events.

WHO'S GONNA CARRY THE BOATS?
Revisado: 05-05-23
It was great learning more about Goggins and the events that led him to where he is today.
I'm just confused as to why there's a ghost writer. Sometimes in the interview sections, the ghost writer refers to the text as what Goggins wrote. Furthermore, it's important to note that the ghost writer narrates the entire book. This isn't necessarily a bad thing but something to keep in mind.

I'm a fan of AVGN but I wouldn't consider myself a HUGE fan, y'know what I mean? I picked up this book after realizing it was about him and it was surprisingly good. It's a great documentary into his life and thoughts. I loved it.

I was really surprised by how good the experience of listening to this book ended being. It was really awesome, especially considering it was recorded in 2005.

Interesting Author but Feels Uninspired
Revisado: 05-05-23
I'm a big Reggie fan and it was nice to learn about his story and some behinds the scenes stuff about Nintendo. I think that some of his advice is very general and something you would hear from the many other people making advice books. Certain things do stick out but it really wasn't memorable. The most memorable parts had to do with his personal life events and stories about Nintendo.
While I could listen to Reggie's voice all day, he speaks like he's announcing a videogame the whole time. He never really lets go of that tone until the bonus interview.

Historia
Jennette McCurdy was six years old when she had her first acting audition. Her mother’s dream was for her only daughter to become a star, and Jennette would do anything to make her mother happy. So she went along with what Mom called “calorie restriction." She endured extensive at-home makeovers while Mom chided, “Your eyelashes are invisible, okay? You think Dakota Fanning doesn’t tint hers?” She was even showered by Mom until age sixteen while sharing her diaries, email, and all her income. In I’m Glad My Mom Died, Jennette recounts all this in unflinching detail.

Refreshingly Relateable with Good Narration
Revisado: 05-05-23
It was really refreshing seeing into the genuine other side of fame for child actors. It helps you realize some actors and actresses aren't different from normal people.
I've seen a lot of reviews criticizing the narration and I would like to give my take on it. I think it's perfect. The author Jeannette, speaks like how she normally would. Most of the book goes over very heavy and serious topics. Her tone is normal. She's lived through these things, they've hurt her a lot in the past, and now she's reaching some sort of neutrality with them. For me, it didn't come off as monotone. She also does voices and changes her tone to fit different situations, as you would expect.
