Historia
In The Anxious Generation, social psychologist Jonathan Haidt lays out the facts about the epidemic of teen mental illness that hit many countries at the same time. He then investigates the nature of childhood, including why children need play and independent exploration to mature into competent, thriving adults. Haidt shows how the “play-based childhood” began to decline in the 1980s, and how it was finally wiped out by the arrival of the “phone-based childhood” in the early 2010s.

Made me anxious listening
Revisado: 04-24-25
Lots of bad news I already suspected. Left me longing for what conversations sound like with real kids like mine. The author mentioned what he did but I assumed his supportive wife and friends were a huge help. I don’t have the influence I want and so I personally got more and more anxious. I agree with the studies. Yet, I needed more nuanced and subtle direction for next steps within my home which I will need to find outside this book. However, I loved the author’s other book- “The Righteous Mind.” And I hope he continues helping us all with his research and insight.

Stop the dysfunction of unhealthy relationships and learn biblical ways to set boundaries--and, when necessary, say goodbye. Is it unloving or selfish to set a boundary with family members or friends? Are Christians ever called to walk away from a relationship that’s no longer safe or sustainable? #1 New York Times bestselling author Lysa TerKeurst deeply understands these hard questions in the midst of relational struggles.

Another Christian book borrowing wisdom from modern psychology / science of mental health
Revisado: 09-14-24
Christian self-help authors have 3 balls to juggle. Personal experience, the Willy-Nilly-proof-text-Bible verses both in and out of style and the solid research by secular institutions. The book was light on the details of the author’s memoirs. It had texts that did not add to the main ideas or were watered down to do so. And I’d like credit to be given to research institutions that are training counselors and psychologists. This has always been useful - even if tucked into Christian books written by women who have woken up to the reality of modern mental health practices published in peer reviewed journals. The Bible verses have kept so many people blind to a wise life. It’s sad to see it yet again on the Christian shelves. We are standing on the shoulders of giants (mental health researchers). Read this and see how a woman freed herself. But note that she is still clinging to the source of her main problem to begin with… a Christian community hell bent on revising Bible texts to fit the healthy culture around them.

Historia
Dr. Montessori devoted her life to the teaching and understanding children. This remarkable work is one of the greatest guides and insights in children's way of thinking for all teachers and parents. Maria Montessori brought new life to the field in the late 19th and early 20th century. In her own words: "If we give children 'the means of existence', the struggle for it disappears, and a vigorous expansion of life takes its place."

Historia
A young woman is in love with a successful surgeon, a man torn between his love for her and his incorrigible womanizing. His mistress, a free-spirited artist, lives her life as a series of betrayals—while her other lover, earnest, faithful, and good, stands to lose everything because of his noble qualities. In a world where lives are shaped by irrevocable choices and fortuitous events, and everything occurs but once, existence seems to lose its substance, its weight. Hence we feel “the unbearable lightness of being."

Saddening
Revisado: 08-15-24
So much empty sex I got numb. No levity or irony- Just sad people having sex making each other more sad with more sex. The ending wasn’t what I thought it would be. The dog was a nice break from the couples who seemed miserable even while having sex. I got a quote or two but only read this book because someone I knew said they liked the author. I’m done with Milan K.

There wasn’t much subtlety or nuance of idea or plot. It becomes a warp in time for tomahawk throwing. So much time spent on that. Also, the narrator pronounces the word, “among” as “amongst.” That’s distracting.

Historia
In this riveting memoir, Wade challenges Africans to redefine their narrative, casting aside imposed inferiority to reclaim their innate brilliance. This is not a recounting of poverty and politics. It's an indictment of a world that views Africa as nothing more than a colonial chessboard, with charity acting as the block that keeps Africans stuck. The surprising truth: Africa’s problems are not due to colonialism, corruption, bad leadership, poor skills, or a lack of education. It’s something much bigger, and yet it’s only been visible to entrepreneurs...until now.

I’m convinced
Revisado: 01-16-24
A compelling persuasion from a practical mind that is aware of the main way to unleash African prosperity: capitalism.
Because the author is loyal to her native land and optimistic of the capabilities of Africans,
she enumerates logically, personally and historically that “trade is better than aid” and wealth creation works better than poverty reduction.
Read by the author, her delivery is stirring and her sincerity is a force. Her own mind was changed. Mine is too. I went off to absorb the resources mentioned in her work.
She is well researched and has enough vision for many to follow.
