Historia
Now reduced to a schoolyard chant, the Hope family murders shocked the Maine coast one bloody night in 1929. While most people assume seventeen-year-old Lenora was responsible, the police were never able to prove it. Other than her denial after the killings, she has never spoken publicly about that night, nor has she set foot outside Hope’s End, the cliffside mansion where the massacre occurred.

Melodramatic Disappointment
Revisado: 02-12-25
From beginning to end, this overdone gothic-wanna-be was a disappointment, with underdone characters and a trite plot line. I finished it but only because my book club had selected it, and I had committed to being ready for our upcoming discussion.

Historia
Paul was reading a newspaper. Catherine was reading a novel. So begins Room on the Sea, André Aciman's scorching and elegiac love-story about a middle-aged man and woman who meet in the bullpen of jury selection and spend a sultry summer’s week trespassing ever further into each other's hearts. What begins as a flirtation quickly evolves into something deeper, something Paul and Catherine must carry on in secret - and with the understanding that anything more than a casual crush is out of the question.

Historia
Kitty Harris has it all: cosily coupled up with boyfriend Archie, she’s putting in the hours at an ad agency to land her dream job. OK, so maybe they’ve become a bit too comfortable in their routine, with pizza night every Thursday, and maybe the agency isn’t so much up-and-coming as been-and-gone, but Kitty is happy. Until one diamond ring sitting pretty in her pepperoni ruins everything. Kitty does NOT want to get married, not after being caught in the crosshairs of her parent’s destructive divorce.

Historia
My fiancé brought me tea and scrambled eggs in bed that morning, and we snuggled together, talking about buying our rings, and about our perfect wedding next year. Then we headed into town. He held my hand and gazed at the ring I liked best, a smile spreading slowly over his face. Then a glass of bubbly to celebrate. I felt flushed, excited and ready for the rest of my life with the man I loved. We race to get on the train home. It screams to a halt and I run towards its open doors. Made it. I think he’s right behind me — but when I turn around, he’s gone.

Suspenseful but Unsatisfactory Ending
Revisado: 12-11-24
The author did a good job of creating suspense on two levels, the disappearance and the ongoing threats. Unfortunately, the ending fell far short. I love a satisfying ending, but this was far from that.

Washington, DC, 1950. Everyone keeps to themselves at Briarwood House, a down-at-the-heels all-female boardinghouse in the heart of the nation’s capital where secrets hide behind white picket fences. But when the lovely, mysterious widow Grace March moves into the attic room, she draws her oddball collection of neighbors into unlikely friendship. Grace’s weekly attic-room dinner parties and window-brewed sun tea become a healing balm on all their lives, but she hides a terrible secret of her own.

Character are forever memorable
Revisado: 11-26-24
I loved everything about this book—the story, the characters, the pacing, everything. It’s a great book that, though very different from one I am currently writing, offers many insights into the art of novel writing.

Entertaining and fun!
Revisado: 01-26-24
I very much liked the story, although it struck me at times as a young adult book, rather than a book for adult audiences—and maybe it’s supposed to be. The narrator did a good job but was overly dramatic to me, and I found myself making fun of the pity party Lucy kept having.I finally decided it was the constant teary voice of the narrator that I was mocking. I kept listening until the end, so it obviously kept me engaged on many levels.

Historia
Olivia McAfee knows what it feels like to start over. Her picture-perfect life—living in Boston, married to a brilliant cardiothoracic surgeon, raising their beautiful son, Asher—was upended when her husband revealed a darker side. She never imagined that she would end up back in her sleepy New Hampshire hometown, living in the house she grew up in and taking over her father’s beekeeping business. Lily Campanello is familiar with do-overs, too. When she and her mom relocate to Adams, New Hampshire, for her final year of high school, they both hope it will be a fresh start.

Enjoyable Read
Revisado: 11-22-23
I loved many things about this book but also disliked some things. The parts about Lily and Asher, as well as Lily’s whole situation were very compelling and well-performed. However, I felt Olivia’s constant regression to her abusive marriage was forced and ultimately overbearing to the story. A little would have gone a long way. I also knew very early on that Maya was responsible for Lily’s death, and though dramatic irony can be effective, this was just too obvious too early. I gained huge insight into the whole trans thing and was happy to have listened to the audiobook for that alone.

Historia
Chemist Elizabeth Zott is not your average woman. In fact, Elizabeth Zott would be the first to point out that there is no such thing as an average woman. But it’s the early 1960s and her all-male team at Hastings Research Institute takes a very unscientific view of equality. Except for one: Calvin Evans; the lonely, brilliant, Nobel–prize nominated grudge-holder who falls in love with—of all things—her mind. True chemistry results.

Historia
Goldengrove’s towers and twisted chimneys rose at the very edge of the peaceful Weald, a stone’s throw from the poisonous marshes and merciless waters of Rye Bay. Young Tabby Palethorp had been running wild there, ever since her mother grew too ill to leave her room. I was the perfect choice to give Tabby a good English education: thoroughly respectable and far too plain to tempt her lonely father, Sir Kit, to indiscretion. I knew better than to trust my new employer with the truth about my past. But knowing better couldn’t stop me from yearning for impossible things.

Compelling but too melodramatic and drawn out
Revisado: 03-26-21
The story had many good moments, and the narration was great. Unfortunately, it also had way too many repetitious and melodramatically sad moments that made me roll my eyes and wish it would speed up and end. It could have been done far more effectively in about half the time.
