Historia
In KL, Wachsmann fills this glaring gap in our understanding. He not only synthesizes a new generation of scholarly work, much of it untranslated and unknown outside of Germany, but also presents startling revelations, based on many years of archival research, about the functioning and scope of the camp system.

An exhaustive yet compellingly history of the German Concentration Camps
Revisado: 04-21-25
Exhaustive in detail but with compelling first hand accounts. Extremely thorough and full of insight on the cast of characters who carried out Himmler’s plans to the end even when the war was very much lost. A solid work of research into a very difficult subject, but so necessary.

Historia
Evans interweaves a broad narrative of the war’s progress with viscerally affecting personal testimony from a wide range of people - from generals to front-line soldiers, from Hitler Youth activists to middle-class housewives. The Third Reich at War lays bare the dynamics of a nation more deeply immersed in war than any society before or since. Fresh insights into the conflict’s great events are here, from the invasion of Poland to the Battle of Stalingrad to Hitler’s suicide in the bunker.

An objective review of the Third Reich at War
Revisado: 12-26-24
The book used critical resources that have become increasingly available though out the decades after the post war period. Evan’s does an outstanding job of bringing these sources of information together in a compellingly personal story. It is well written and researched work. I highly recommend it.

Historia
In 1945, after his capture at the end of the Second World War, Hermann Göring arrived at an American-run detention center in war-torn Luxembourg, accompanied by 16 suitcases and a red hatbox. The suitcases contained all manner of paraphernalia: medals, gems, two cigar cutters, silk underwear, a hot water bottle, and the equivalent of $100,000,000 in cash. Hidden in a coffee can, a set of brass vials housed glass capsules containing a clear liquid and a white precipitate: potassium cyanide. Joining Göring in the detention center were the elite of the captured Nazi regime....

It was a very interesting insight on Nuremberg prisoners from a very unique perspective. Amazing that Kelly had no apparent interviews with Speer though and really no mention of why not.

Historia
According to US Secretary of War Henry Stimson, the "most shocking single event" of World War II was not the Japanese attack on Pearl Harbor, but rather the fall of France in spring 1940. Michael Neiberg offers a dramatic history of the American response - a policy marked by panic and moral ineptitude, which placed the United States in league with fascism and nearly ruined the alliance with Britain.

Very insightful
Revisado: 05-26-24
Very insightful read and wonderfully written. Enjoyed new perspectives and another perspective on how the poorly the Roosevelt administration handled the foreign relations in Europe throughout the war. Great leader on the domestic front, but a complete disaster on the foreign affairs front. The State Department was a complete joke.

Historia
After Nuremberg is about the fleeting nature of American punishment for German war criminals convicted at the twelve Nuremberg trials of 1946-1949. Because of repeated American grants of clemency and parole, ninety-seven of the 142 Germans convicted at the Nuremberg trials, many of them major offenders, regained their freedom years, sometimes decades, ahead of schedule. High-ranking Nazi plunderers, kidnappers, slave laborers, and mass murderers all walked free by 1958.

Lack of Resolve
Revisado: 05-26-24
The fact that American officials lacked resolve to stick to the sentences originally handed down at Nuremberg is a disgrace. The fact that some of these leaders who were appointed to positions of oversight neglected to review all the original cases is abhorrent. Justice was not served and some of families of these officials should be ashamed. I commend the author for bringing this travesty to print. Unfortunately the story was laborious told.

Historia
In Berlin at War, acclaimed historian Roger Moorhouse provides a magnificent and detailed portrait of everyday life at the epicenter of the Third Reich. Berlin was the stage upon which the rise and fall of the Third Reich was most visibly played out. It was the backdrop for the most lavish Nazi ceremonies, the site of Albert Speer's grandiose plans for a new "world metropolis", and the scene of the final climactic battle to defeat Nazism.

World War II began with a metallic roar as the German Blitzkrieg raced across Europe, spearheaded by the most dreaded weapon of the 20th century: the Panzer. No German tank better represents that thundering power than the infamous Tiger, and Otto Carius was one of the most successful commanders to ever take a Tiger into battle, destroying well over 150 enemy tanks during his incredible career.

Good German Panzer Perspective
Revisado: 11-30-23
Otto’s story was very insightful from a German Panzer perspective. His experience at war was a perspective from the other side and is well worth reading. His thoughts on the treatment of German soldiers by the Allies seems to be extremely naive especially when he used the analogy to a concentration camp perspective. He ignored the German atrocities on the Eastern front or refused to consider these when making his analogy.

Historia
Beloved British journalist Daniel Finkelstein tells the extraordinary story of the years before his mother met his father—years of war and trials they barely survived. Daniel Finkelstein's grandfather was a German Jewish intellectual leader who tolled an early warning of the impending Holocaust and became an archivist of Nazi crimes. He relocated his family to safety in Amsterdam, where they knew Anne Frank. But in those years safety was an illusion: Anne Frank famously went into hiding and Daniel's mother, Mirjam, also still a child, was sent to Bergen-Belsen with her mother and sisters.

Gunter K. Koschorrek was a machine-gunner on the Russian front in WWII. He wrote his illicit diary on any scraps of paper he could lay his hands on. As keeping a diary was strictly forbidden, he sewed the pages into the lining of his thick winter coat and deposited them with his mother on infrequent trips home on leave. The diary went missing, and it was when he was reunited with his daughter in America some 40 years later that it came to light and became Blood Red Snow.
