Historia
Everyone expected Violet Sorrengail to die during her first year at Basgiath War College-Violet included. But Threshing was only the first impossible test meant to weed out the weak-willed, the unworthy, and the unlucky. Now the real training begins, and Violet’s already wondering how she’ll get through. It’s not just that it’s grueling and maliciously brutal, or even that it’s designed to stretch the riders’ capacity for pain beyond endurance. It’s the new vice commandant, who’s made it his personal mission to teach Violet exactly how powerless she is–unless she betrays the man she loves.

Both Fourth Wing and Iron Fame…
Revisado: 05-02-24
Are not worth the hype. Yes, I’ve read much worse, but those books I’m thinking weren’t presented as THE GREATEST BOOKS like these are in social media nowadays. The plot is boring because repetitive, predictable because full of clichês and… well, I don’t care for the whole chapters of badly written sex sprinkled around. Everytime the two protagonists kiss, the description feels like a narration of a working washing machine. Ew.
PS: It’s very confusing to have a heroine who is Smarter-Than-Thou that still does Dumb Main Character Decisions throughout the book. And I still don’t find the random facts she sputters when concentrated a credible reaction, rather as a obvious means to do info dump. Poetry, alliterations, quotes, fairytales? Sure she could say those in stressful moments, I could believe that. But I never knew of a person no matter how “smart” who sputters tedious geography and national economy trends when stressed - maybe there is someone, but I simply can’t believe it right away.
PPS: Ok, if this is supposedly a translation of a book written by the friend scribe of the protagonist as said in the beginning, then why oh why did the scribe knew about the sex scenes with so many details? And to put it in an “official record” of the events? This is silly! Who edited these books?!

Probably better to read this instead of listening
Revisado: 11-26-23
I’m a non native english speaker. The fake accents and strange entonations of the narrator, mixed with the cultural ficcional maze that sums up this story make it VERY hard to follow the plot. It has an elegant worlbuilding that reminds me of the very old fairytale-like stories - I really liked that. I would prefer it if the characters were a little more fun, though. And the romantic couples are not very convincing to me, probably because I don’t find any of the love interests likeable, at all.

Historia
There’s an apocryphal story that Alexander the Great once captured a notorious pirate named Diomedes. The great conqueror decided to interview the doomed pirate, asking him what he thought gave him the right to seize the property of other people. The pirate responded by asking the emperor what he thought gave him the right to take property that doesn’t belong to him, including entire countries. The story goes that Alexander thought the pirate very clever, granting him freedom instead of execution.

Not an intro, but some interesting perspective
- De N. D. Hemingway en 06-21-21
A very cynic perspective
Revisado: 07-02-23
It has few and scattered stories and many personnal opinions. That would be fine by me, but the personnal comments the lecturer does are cynical and obvious for the average reader - essentially, “party pooper comments” about social justice directed to times that weren’t (again, obviously) meeting up to the standards of today.
I thought this could be a more enjoyable theme to hear, and I do blame it on my childhood, specially with the Muppets movie. Sadly, this lecturer has a poor sense of humour and makes light talk on the worst possible sombre momments.
PS: I’m portuguese. “Ladrones” is not a portuguese word, at least nowadays, it only exists in spanish. This and other small things make me guess that the facts about portuguese and spanish people are sometimes mixed in this course. I’m guessing the old british sources and translations can have mistakes about it, and it’s not the lecturer’s fault, But what about checking with a portuguese/spanish historian before lecturing about it?

Many of literature's greatest works, from ancient myths to the works of Nobel laureates, rely on fantasy. Even when there has been a dominant preference for realism, generation after generation of readers have been drawn to stories of the fantastic-not only for what they help us learn about ourselves as individuals or as members of society, but also for what they show about our social values.

Everyone raise the fantasy flag
Revisado: 03-02-23
There are some minor inaccuracies in the plot summaries… for instance, Werther didn’t drown, he shot himself in the head (I remember it all too well) despite the Werther effect being associated with drowning, I think... I do not agree with the definition of science fiction preferred by the author, there are some works I would put in the true fantasy section, but I guess no one agrees on that… In the end, I liked it a lot, specially the first part. It highlights the transformations in both genres in a balanced and respectful way. It’s very easy to listen too! (except the post-modernist part, but that’s not the author’s fault… it’s your’s, Italo Calvino -_-)

I almost stopped listening during the first chapter. I wasn’t enjoying the characters (they reminded me of a John Green novel and that isn’t my type of story…). I’m glad I continued. Every little detail makes sense. I loved it.

Historia
Thirty-nine was a fantastic year. I was married to the man I loved. I had a body that worked without creaking. My grandma, who raised me, was still healthy, and life was pretty damned good. But as they say, all good things come to an end. One year later, I’m a widow. My joints are starting to ache. Gram is in the nursing home, and dead people think my home is some kind of supernatural bed-and-breakfast. Gluing body parts onto semi-transparent people has become a side job - deceased people I’m not even sure are actually there.

It needs better characters
Revisado: 12-17-22
I picked this story because I’m going through a mini midlife crisis myself and hoped to feel better, but I really don’t like the main character. She doesn’t strike me as 40, maybe 16. The afterlife concept, otherwise, is overused already in literature and because of that the story must be well written to matter to me. And this is sadly not enough.

Perfect for young fantasy readers to start
Revisado: 08-30-22
At the beginning, it’s confusing and seems full of familiar tropes, but ends up surprisingly coherent and fresh. It’s a simple, sweet high-fantasy story, It has well-thought themes of mercy, empathy and self-acceptance. It’s funny, and sometimes riddiculous, and sometimes obvious, just like a fairytale.
In the end, I guess it’s more or less perfect.

Hard to review…
Revisado: 05-27-22
The story is weirdly funny from the beginning to end and it has one of the best performances I’ve heard of an audiobook!
The problem I have with this is that, sometimes, I don’t find the joke that funny, but it doesn’t matter, because every joke is repeated by the characters at least five times. Maybe even more. It has a basic plot embellished with gay sex puns and a glittery unicorn. Once you accept these facts, it will be more enjoyable.

When Amethyst Faye was six years old, she was almost stolen by a monster in the woods on the same night her mother mysteriously disappeared. Ten years, a half-dozen psychiatrists, and a slew of diagnoses haven’t made things any better; she is still plagued by nightmares, ridiculed at school, and misunderstood by everyone from her teachers to her counselor to her father. And lately she’s been sprouting thick green thorns out of her skin.

A not bad young teen fantasy story
Revisado: 05-19-22
It’s well-shaped, consistent and more original than it looks. The romance between the main characters (as it was pointed out by other reviewers) is exaggerated, but believable for teens in love for the first time. The author took the time to prune the details (pun intended) so I was pleased with the end result.
