Historia
Everything you’ve heard about vampires is a lie. They can’t fly. No murders allowed (the community hates that). And turning into a bat? Completely ridiculous. In fact, vampire life is really just a lot of blood bags and night jobs. For Louise Chao, it’s also lonely, since she swore off family ages ago.

Good story, could have used a better editor
Revisado: 02-03-23
I like the concept, but the writing style was a little underdeveloped. There were lots of instances of repetition from paragraph to paragraph that wasn't a literary device and should have been spotted by an editor. The story felt a little young for adult fiction, and though it had its touching moments, the novel lacked depth overall.

Amazing ghost story, but opt for the print version. The narration is all over the place. The voices of children and women this performer did made it hard to listen to with headphones.

Historia
Art Barbara was so not cool. He was a seventeen-year-old high school loner in the late 1980s who listened to hair metal, had to wear a monstrous back-brace at night for his scoliosis, and started an extracurricular club for volunteer pallbearers at poorly attended funerals. But his new friend thought the Pallbearers Club was cool. And she brought along her Polaroid camera to take pictures of the corpses.

Good book, but not a thriller
Revisado: 07-15-22
The way this book has been promoted did the story itself dirty. It isn't especially thrilling or suspenseful. Predictable, in fact. I don't think I would have been as disappointed with this book had it been billed as dark fiction. That's not to say it isn't horror-- or very much on brand for Tremblay. But I was carried through this book by inertia, not suspense.

Nemo Frisby used to be a detective. Now he drives an Uber between billionaire mansions in California. But he never lost the nose for the case - and when his housecleaner, Trinity Fox, discovers a young woman lying dead in her neighbourhood, she persuades him to help her prove it wasn't suicide. Their investigation leads them to the Bel Air home of a wealthy movie producer, who built his mansion over a Native American burial site. Ancient mythology tells of a demon who, if unearthed, can imbue evil men with terrible power.

Historia
Money's tight and their new home is a fixer-upper. Deep in rural South West England, with an ancient wood at the foot of the garden, Tom and his family are miles from anywhere and anyone familiar. His wife, Fiona, was never convinced that buying the money-pit at auction was a good idea. Not least because the previous owner committed suicide. Though no one can explain why.

Poor audio quality
Revisado: 01-27-22
Half way through the book I noticed a distinct drop in audio quality. It became tinny and there were distracting pops. I was already turned off by the narrator's approach to women's voices, and this made it hard to enjoy with headphones. The story was OK. Plenty scary, but the writing style is repetitive and too florid.

A slasher for all/Lives up to the hype
Revisado: 07-17-21
If you've ever wondered if your taste in horror was sick, or questioned why some creators have big, bloody murder fetishes...this packs a lot of brain candy. But, if you are a horror nerd or love a gruesome slasher... you're also going to love this book!
Meticulously researched; characters you can see and feel,;thoughtful insight into trauma, grief, and violence; and a plot that won't stop. CW: Everything? But delivered with care and a critical eye...But also gore galore.

Dark and complex cosmic horror
Revisado: 07-09-21
The publisher's summary and "teen/family" label don't do this book justice. The novel was much darker, more complicated, and disturbing (in a good way) than I would have guessed. More than *just* a ghost story, this book will leave you haunted.

Historia
All Bram wanted was to disappear - from her old life, her family's past, and from the scandal that continues to haunt her. The only place left to go is Louth, the tiny town on the Hudson River where her uncle, James, has been renovating an old mansion. But James is haunted by his own ghosts. Months earlier, his beloved wife died in a fire that people say was set by her daughter. The tragedy left James a shell of the man Bram knew - and destroyed half the house he'd so lovingly restored. The manor is creepy, and so are the locals.

Not enough and too much at the same time
Revisado: 07-01-21
There were sufficient twists to keep me interested until the end, but the book fell flat in terms of spookiness. In the end the (too many) intertwining stories seemed forced to conclusion, and I was left mildly confused and underwhelmed. CW: abuse, addiction, and sexual assault

Poor reviews miss a lot
Revisado: 06-26-21
Although this book has a lot of common horror tropes, they are curated in a refreshing way.
The negative reviews here criticize the literary devices like repetition that are critical to the characters and plot (Stephen King does this ALL the time btw). Or these reviews want the novel to be something it's not.
Though I'm not the biggest fan of unreliable narrators or dream sequences, this book uses both tastefully. The result is a well organized narrative with a satisfying ending.
