Great Narration and Brilliant Story

I found the entire series to be clever, witty, heartbreaking, cheeky (I love when the author pokes fun at himself), and unique among so many fantasy series. I think the author is quite genius in the take he crafted, even more so in how he told it.

I actually enjoyed the narrator quite a lot. He made it clear which character was speaking and was consistent with those nuances throughout the series.

I usually enjoy a "happily ever after", but liked that this story didn't necessarily have every storyline and beloved character get a happy ending. It's important that the stakes are "real" and not everything can be undone by magick... not everyone saved by a spell. Making endings temporary and heartache easily healed also diminishes the real moments of joy and triumph.

Jay Kristoff gets that... he's like GRRM that way.

I can say I've found another series that I truly love and to which I am sad to say farewell.

I don't know what some of these others reviewers are complaining about... it's not my typical read (Sarah J Maas, Cassandra Clare, Diana Gabaldon, Richelle Mead) but not every book is the same. This feels more like a Neil Gaiman or GRRM read. It's a bit raw and the main character isn't exactly noble... but she's interesting and intelligent and "not without her charms". I find the premise original, the world- building solid, and the writing quite beautiful. There is a poetic quality and compelling imagery. I am particularly fond of the way it is written as a narrator speaking to the reader as the narrator (identity yet unknown at end of book 1) recounts the tale.

While the narrator does have a tendency to enunciate in a Shatner-like way, it really doesn't bother me. I like the variation of accent, tone, volume that makes each character identifiable. I also don't mind when the author speeds up during certain scenes, which was another complaint I read.

It's not a 5-star read for me because it doesn't live up to Outlander or ACOTAR or TID... not much could for me... but I look forward to the next 2 books.

My ONLY complaint is with the production. There are bizarre moments in the audio in which the narrator suddenly sounds far away or something. I can't put my finger on it, but it's a very noticeable shift in the recording that has nothing to do with the actual narrator.

Love this narrator and glad she also was the dance narrator of the first book in the series. The book is so good.... everything SJM writes is so good... I just need the next book!!

Crap ending. A novella or final book would've been good. Feels unfinished and the author made a poor choice in leaving a key character "in the dark".

Also, what's up with Kyo's daughter LUISA suddenly being called Marta?!

I love Richelle Mead and very much enjoy this series. But the narrator sounds way too old for the main character. Terrible.

Narrator Improves The Flaws

I enjoyed this book and the one before it. However, the author needs to keep better notes and he a better editor. There are frequent inconsistencies in the "lore" and the world- building was lazy. Compared to Sarah J. Mass or Cassandra Clare, who create intricate and almost tangible worlds, lore, etc... this author changes this from, not just book to book, but within the same book. The most irritating part is the use of modern slang and idioms. It's so disjointed.

All that said, the chemistry between the characters, the foreshadowing, and the underlying story makes me want to keep reading. The narrator improves the book as exponentially and this one of the rare reads to which I would rather listen than read.

I don't love these novellas when one narrator reads all of the main novels, then another reads the novellas. They get accents wrong (this one did..SETH DOES NOT HAVE AN AMERICAN ACCENT) and it's really distracting if they say names or other things wrong as well. Speaking of accents, the narrator should never, ever do a British accent again... ever.
The story was ok. Ghosts aren't my thing. Ghosts in love and able to live as if they had mortal bodies is even weirder. It just makes me sad, really.

I loved the story because.. London, Jem, Tessa...

But do these narrators do no research into the most widely accepted or used accents for recurring characters? Katerina has an accent that sounds as though it were from the West Indies or maybe even Spain. The narrator did American accents at first until she appeared to recall that background characters should have British accents.

The story was ok. Short but ended sweetly. But BAD Ross Butler for giving Will an American accent. Just...NO!

the narrator of these books is great, but the stories are too short... this one wasn't as memorable for its brevity
