Good until it turns into a hollywood action movie
Revisado: 06-04-20
I enjoyed the first part of the book where the female protagonist shows wisdom and bravery to solve a mystery, for the love of her son. The mystery is somewhat scary but compelling. I went through the chapters, looking forward to the next surprise. However, it starts to go downhill when the root of the mystery is revealed and the male protagonist reveals his secret skills one after another. The thrill becomes an action movie since the plots are so predictable and the main characters are too capable to look real.
(Yes I picked up this book just to see how it "predicted" the virus. No the story isn't much related to that)

Historia
On Christmas Eve, 2017, Tess Henry was found dead in a dumpster in Las Vegas. Tess was a 28-year-old new mother, a former honor roll student, and a high school basketball player from suburban Roanoke, Virginia, a place ravaged by the national opioid crisis. The New York Times best-selling author Beth Macy chronicled Tess and her mom, Patricia, through Tess' harrowing, years-long battle to recover from heroin addiction in her award-winning book Dopesick: Dealers, Doctors, and the Drug Company That Addicted America.

Heartbreaking story well narrated
Revisado: 02-04-20
Narrated by the author journalist, this book is a true story about a drug addict who used to be a good student and friend of many. Even though I already know how hard it is for one to combat addiction scientifically, the book offers many angles that I haven't thought of. The stigma, lack of medical assistance, and the physical torture one's trapped in made it almost impossible to be drug-free again, regardless of how much one wants to. If you want the answer for "how do I prevent this from happening to my child", this is the book to listen.
The performance is way beyond my expectation of an audiobook. It's not just reading from transcription. You'll hear real recorded interviews and background sound effect that you never get from text. The performance itself should be given a lot of credit and I think it's the future of audible originals.

Historia
Most books about the history of humanity pursue either a historical or a biological approach, but Dr. Yuval Noah Harari breaks the mold with this highly original book. From examining the role evolving humans have played in the global ecosystem to charting the rise of empires, Sapiens integrates history and science to reconsider accepted narratives, connect past developments with contemporary concerns, and examine specific events within the context of larger ideas.

Quality declines. Too subjective.
Revisado: 11-27-19
To be fair it's a fun read. However, I started to notice that the author infused a lot of personal opinions after the first half of the book. I would not recommend to anyone who wants to have a more factual description of modern history.

Historia
In the New York Times bestseller Brain Rules, Dr. John Medina, a molecular biologist, shares his lifelong interest in how the brain sciences might influence the way we teach our children and the way we work. In each chapter, he describes a brain rule - what scientists know for sure about how our brains work - and then offers transformative ideas for our daily lives. Medina’s fascinating stories and infectious sense of humor breathe life into brain science.

Solid contents and enthusiastic narration
Revisado: 09-06-19
As a former researcher, I'm impressed by how the author respects facts. He is honest about how much research has been done on each subject and gives warnings on controversial topics and inconclusive areas under active research. The narration is great. As a sleep-deprived parent of a baby, I still mostly stay awake when listening.
