In this monumental and provocative history, Patrick Buchanan makes the case that, if not for the blunders of British statesmen - Winston Churchill first among them - the horrors of two world wars and the Holocaust might have been avoided and the British Empire might never have collapsed into ruins.

Historia
When the once-mighty city of Rome was sacked by barbarians in 410 and lay in ruins, it signaled the end of an era—and the beginning of a thousand years of profound transformation. In a gripping narrative bursting with big names—from St Augustine and Attila the Hun to the Prophet Muhammad and Eleanor of Aquitaine—Dan Jones charges through the history of the Middle Ages. Powers and Thrones takes listeners on a journey through an emerging Europe, the great capitals of late Antiquity, as well as the influential cities of the Islamic West.

Historia
It was to be the war to end all wars, and it began at 11:15 on the morning of June 28, 1914, in an outpost of the Austro-Hungarian Empire called Sarajevo. It would officially end nearly five years later. Unofficially, however, it has never ended: Many of the horrors we live with today are rooted in the First World War. The Great War left millions of civilians and soldiers maimed or dead. It also saw the creation of new technologies of destruction: tanks, planes, and submarines; machine guns and field artillery; poison gas and chemical warfare.

Great, well rounded telling
Revisado: 08-08-24
A great and balanced telling over the big and small pictures of the Great War. It jumps between the fronts often but remains coherent and manages to keep it grounded.

Historia
A thrilling and revelatory narrative of one of the most epic and consequential periods in 20th century history - the Arab Revolt and the secret “great game” to control the Middle East. Lawrence in Arabia definitively overturns received wisdom on how the modern Middle East was formed. Sweeping in its action, keen in its portraiture, acid in its condemnation of the destruction wrought by European colonial plots, this is a book that brilliantly captures the way in which the folly of the past creates the anguish of the present.

The tragedy of a triumph
Revisado: 05-02-24
This combined with Horton’s ‘Enough already’ really bring home the failures in our attempts to orchestrate sovereign people. TE Lawrence was truly one of a kind. Anyone considering this book should read Seven Pillars prior to this. Once you’ve read through both you’ll have a good idea of his life, the triumphs and tragedy. This is a great biography and the author did a great job of balancing the multitude of stories and personalities involved.

I was left wanting.
Revisado: 04-17-24
Not greatly detailed yet not a cohesive vivid narrative either. It’s a good telling yet as mentioned in other reviews it fails to put together a consistent narrative. It comes across as broken and lacking continuity from one chapter to the next. A good overview.

Not the whole book
Revisado: 02-27-24
Was listening to James and the Giant Peach with my child when all of a sudden it skipped over all of the cloud-men chapters, my child’s favorite part. I feel like this was a scam to sell me the abridged version when I bought the whole thing. The author is fast paced when reading it and does little emoting but is good enough. I would definitely want a refund.

With intelligence and wit, author Jonathan Clements blends documentary and storytelling styles to connect the past, present, and future of Japan, and in broad yet detailed strokes reveals a country of paradoxes: a modern nation steeped in ancient traditions; a democracy with an emperor as head of state; a famously safe society built on 108 volcanoes resting on the world's most active earthquake zone; a fast-paced urban and technologically advanced country whose land consists predominantly of mountains and forests.

Drawing on the latest discoveries that have only recently come to light, Scottish archaeologist Neil Oliver goes on the trail of the real Vikings. Where did they emerge from? How did they really live? And just what drove them to embark on such extraordinary voyages of discovery over 1,000 years ago? The Vikings: A New History explores many of those questions for the first time in an epic story of one of the world's great empires of conquest.

Context is Key
Revisado: 10-31-23
This book masters the art of putting a story in context. It seems like a lot of tangents but it all accumulates to tell the story within its context. You’ll come out understanding the period nearly as well as the Vikings. It’s a difficult topic due to the minimal known about them but the author does well. Great narration as well.
