Outstanding Read
Revisado: 09-23-24
Excellent read on the experience and backgrounds of America’s brave fighters and clandestine efforts in the wake of 9/11. The author is not afraid to pull punches regarding the strategy from higher ups while also offering an honest insight to the individual experiences of operators on the field… which is an amazing task in itself. Highly recommend.

Historia
In 1995, Arkady Babchenko was an 18-year-old law student in Moscow when he was drafted into the Russian army and sent to Chechnya. It was the beginning of a torturous journey from naïve conscript to hardened soldier that took Babchenko from the front lines of the first Chechen War in 1995 to the second in 1999. He fought in major cities and tiny hamlets, from the bombed-out streets of Grozny to anonymous mountain villages.

Fascinating description of an often overlooked and forgotten chapter of Russian experience. The author takes you along in his journey and his observations on the conflict, the burdens of human suffering, the evils of the state, and the camaraderie of time in combat offer a dark but profound insight on life and desth

Not my cup of tea, reads like a comic book
Revisado: 09-09-21
I wanted to like this book so badly. Fascinated by the topic and mission…
Cliche characters, couldn’t even finish. If you’re seeking a solid account of the brutality of war without side stories and off putting dialogue, I recommend “With the Old Breed”….
I listened to over half the book just to get the battle of Saipan and it continued to go downhill. Sorry, didn’t feel it did the men of the 40 thieves justice. Former Marine officer here- (06-14)
