Women can be heroes. When twenty-year-old nursing student Frances “Frankie” McGrath hears these words, it is a revelation. Raised in the sun-drenched, idyllic world of Southern California and sheltered by her conservative parents, she has always prided herself on doing the right thing. But in 1965, the world is changing, and she suddenly dares to imagine a different future for herself. When her brother ships out to serve in Vietnam, she joins the Army Nurse Corps and follows his path.

A True Light in the current darkness of DC
Revisado: 02-02-19
Aloha, to whom it may concern. We had a true jewel in the White House, in the Obama era. I was on the verge of tears throughout as the author evokes the passion and intelligence of a person who is a always moving for deeper compassion and understanding within herself and outside. A true Yogi. I lived with her every word these last couple of weeks traveling about my life as I do, and looking forward to the moments when I could listen to her voice and her words. I recommend this intelligent loving narrative of Michelle's life. I identified with her humble upbringing and struggles as a female in a male dominated world, for which we still are working uphill. I understood and identified with bringing up girls in this culture. I felt every emotion of pain at the violence in our society and the inequeties and lack of justice in the power structures. I also cried when she expressed how even then as now, the country has not grown up or evolved in the consciousness that we are all one race, one human race, one human Earth peoples, separated only by .1 percent genetically. Our differences are merely superficial. I am dismayed at the ignorance I see and that is also revealed by our elegant and brilliant first woman/lady. Listen to her. You'll enjoy and feel triumphant in every chapter and journey she travels. Lu

Revisado: 01-07-19
Aloha, While I've always enjoyed Mr. Arkin's film work, I never lived near NY--though my husband was raised on Mott Street--so I'm not familiar with his Broadway work. He is someone I have always been able to identify with. (We have loved watching the Kaminski Method ) I just finished listening to this reading and feel a kinship of spirit. I wonder if you, Alan, are familiar with the teaching of J. Krishnamurti? I discovered him in my early 20s in the 1970s. Through my 46 years as a Yoga Therapist, and teaching for the last 20+ years in Oahu incarcerated population, and K's teaching, I have had most parallel experiences as Mr. A.--many teachings leading to the awareness that we are our own best teacher. This reading is inspiring and helpful that, though we may sometimes feel alone in this personal and public work, that we universally are connected, I'm very grateful to you for that. Mahalo. Historia
In this lyrical, unsentimental, and compelling memoir, the son of a Black African father and a White American mother searches for a workable meaning to his life as a Black American. It begins in New York, where Barack Obama learns that his father - a figure he knows more as a myth than as a man - has been killed in a car accident. This sudden death inspires an emotional odyssey - first to a small town in Kansas, and then to Kenya....

How do our thoughts and emotions affect our health? Are our bodies and minds distinct from one another, or do they function together as parts of an interconnected system? Neuroscientist Candace Pert provides startling and decisive answers to these and other challenging questions that scientists and philosophers have pondered for centuries. Historia
As it was in Anna Karenina, Madame Bovary, and Othello, so it is in life. Most forms of private vice and public evil are kindled and sustained by lies. Acts of adultery and other personal betrayals, financial fraud, government corruption - even murder and genocide - generally require an additional moral defect: a willingness to lie. In Lying, bestselling author and neuroscientist Sam Harris argues that we can radically simplify our lives and improve society by merely telling the truth in situations where others often lie.

Historia
At once a powerful evocation of his early life in Harlem and a disturbing examination of the consequences of racial injustice to both the individual and the body politic, James Baldwin galvanized the nation in the early days of the civil rights movement with this eloquent manifesto. The Fire Next Time stands as one of the essential works of our literature.

Revisado: 04-22-17
One doesn't have to be of any skin color to recognize we are all one race one people. To have white skin and see the suffering and prejudice of any fellow human is...well there is no word to express this sorrow. James comes as close as anyone to explaining how skin color has corrupted so many. The continuation of this sorrowful condition of our present humanity is ignorant beyond the belief of what we know of our brains' capacity for empathy, compassion and understanding--basic intelligence. When will we wake, for heaven's sake?
