Ballard picks up where Harry Bosch left off after his retirement. Fast paced and complex but Ballard follows the leads and solves the crime. I like that she included Maddie in the investigation linking her to Harry. They make a good team and I hope Connelly keeps them together in future novels. I love following the clues to find the culprits and the twists and diversions that have to be solved. Good job Connelly!

Atli Pine and her sister Mercy are the two worst characters Baldacci ever created. I hope this is the end to both of them. I will never read another Atli Pine book again. She and her sister are both borderline psychotic and should both be put away. And the conclusion of Mercy's story is a fitting end to a trio of books about her life story.

Having grown up in the Jim Crow south, I knew about how black people were mistreated and abused. I have learned to be ashamed and embarrassed about how innocent people were mistreated and it made me proud to think that there were a few good people like Jack who saw behind the racism to the reality of human life and tried to defend his beliefs at the cost of his own and his family's safety. I could recognize some of these characters from my own childhood and sad to say it still exists in some areas of the south to this day. It was a true portrayal of the way things were back in the 1950's and 1960's. We've made much progress but there are still many things that could and should be done to make all men and women equal and to stop the violence and inhumanity to others.

So glad Baldacci improved his talent for writing because this was certainly not his best. If I had read this one first, I would never have read another Baldacci novel. But over the years as I've read all of his books, I've come to realize just how talented he is and except for the Atli Pine novels, I have loved all of his characters. This one was too violent for my taste, much like James Patterson and Stuart Woods whose books I no longer read. This was certainly fast paced and in many ways disturbing if this is the way our government really works. (Of course now that a convicted criminal is at the helm I wouldn't doubt anything that comes out of DC.

Even though he is retired, JP Beaumont just can't stay out of the crime solving business. Purely by accident he gets involved in a case that leads to a serial murderer targeting domestic violent crimes. JP uses his old contacts in the police departments to help him in bringing justice to those targeted by this serial killer who turns out to be someone no one would ever expect. Love the way he goes from one clue to another leading you to the conclusion and apprehension of the criminal. And we get to meet the newest Beaumont relative his grandson who is dealing with his own family problems.

Valentine Welch is sent to wyoming to paint a mural in the post office as part of the WPA program developed after the depression. He's offered a place to live while working at a ranch owned by John Long and his wife Eva. Val soon finds himself embroiled in their domestic dispute when Eva runs away and Val is hired to track her down. Along the way he meets some seedy and interesting characters trying to make it thru the depression and hard times. None of the characters were likeable except for Val but he soon gets caught up in their web of intrigue. The author has a very descriptive way of putting the reader into the story. The narrator's voice fit the character, but it was distracting for me.

The narrator's use of three different voices (some male and some female) was distracting and confusing. Story line was okay and kept me guessing, but the outcome was less than satisfying. Too many characters, and too much switching from one story line to another-was it about the detectives trying to solve a murder or Jessica trying to find her mother's murderer? The main character Jessica was too controlling, too macho and too self-centered to be believable. I would not recommend this book.

Joe finds himself embroiled in another mysterious death, and Nate gets involved with a group of anarchists. THey finally come together to solve both problems after much running around and getting into trouble. Lots of twists and turns and bad characters trying to take down the government. It was hard keeping up with all the different characters and trying to figure out where each one fit into the story. Not one of my favorite Joe Pickett books.

A heartrending story

A tragic story about a tragic time in history. Since I am of Irish descent, I was interested in learning more about this time in history even though my family wasn't involved in the famine in Ireland. The story was so sad and depressing yet I'm sure things like this probably happened. The walk to get food and the experience in the cave were so realistic that I felt like I was there with Honora. There was a lot of jumping around from one part of the story to another that it was hard to understand, but eventually it all came together. The narrator was terrific and added much to the story with her accent and tone of voice. I thought Honora was very brave to have taken such a journey by herself with nothing, but I also thought she was very selfish the way she treated the cowboy. He was a good person who rescued her from the situation she was in yet she treated him badly. The characters were very realistic and believable. A good read but be prepared to feel sad.

Great followup to the Bookwoman's Story

I love the concept of the packhorse lending library to reach the backwater areas of Kentucky. The children and women benefited the most from the books and circulars delivered by the packhorse librarians. I can't imagine how lonely and desolate some of their lives must have been during the days before television, radio and modern conveniences. But that visit from the packhorse librarian was the highlight of their week. What a brilliant idea it was to bring entertainment to the forgotten in Appalachia.

Honey's story picked up where her mother and father's stories ended which was very satisfying. I would definitely recommend this book, especially to book clubs. It's a great part of history that not many people were ever aware existed. Kudos to FDR and Eleanor for bringing this project to life, along with all their other contributions to the forgotten citizens of Appalachia.
