Historia
Wharton's most erotic and lyrical novel, Summer explores a daring theme for 1917, a woman's awakening to her sexuality. Eighteen-year-old Charity Royall lives in the small town of North Dormer, ignorant of desire until the arrival of architect Lucius Harney. Like the succulent summer landscape in the Berkshires around them, Charity's romance is lush and picturesque, but its consequences are harsh and real.

I can imagine some lyricism in the text -- if I read it. I hear none in this narration.

First published in 1900, when Thomas Mann was 25, Buddenbrooks is a minutely imagined chronicle of four generations of a North German mercantile family - a work so true to life that it scandalized the author’s former neighbours in his native Lübeck.

Praise for David Rintoul
Revisado: 11-17-18
Others have described this novel well.
Here I simply want especially to call attention to the narrator, David Rintoul, who is outstanding. I've read many other Mann novels, but never this one. I am guessing that if I had read it, I would have found it a bit pedestrian and tedious, but Rintoul made every second of this narration interesting and rewarding.
Now what we really need is this: David Rintoul reading the Wood translation of The Magic Mountain. And then David Rintoul reading Doctor Faustus.

Detailed; semi-technical; historical context
Revisado: 08-17-17
Greenberg sprinkles his usual silly jokes throughout, and of course follows the constricting Great Courses format with its fake applause, etc., but *unlike* other Greenberg courses this one is supported by excellent performances and sound reproduction -- and there is a lot of music.
(From the accompanying PDF download:
All of the musical examples from the Beethoven and Mozart string quartets incorporated in this lecture series are performed by the Alexander String Quartet. Many are drawn from the quartet’s recordings for the FoghornClassics label.)
My Audible purchase includes a helpful 157-page PDF download, dated 2009, including a good bibliography.

Historia
Winner of the Orange Broadband Prize for Fiction 2008, The Road Home is the best-selling story of Lev, a middle-aged migrant from Eastern Europe, who moves to London in search of work after losing his wife and job. Lev's London is awash with money, celebrity and complacency. The world Tremain creates is both convincing and poignant.

A poignant story beautifully narrated
Revisado: 11-13-16
My listening experience turned tragically ironic insofar as during it a Rumpelstiltskin bigotry against migration made itself manifest in the 2016 election in the USA, making the sad plight of the other more woeful than it already was.
As usual, Juliet Stevenson delivers a wonderful narration.

Absorbing and moving
Revisado: 08-30-16
This is by turns delightful, sad, and meditative. It has (except for the short postscript) a beautiful structure. The author's narration is exceptionally well done -- although typically I prefer to read a book rather than having it read to me, this book is an intense aural experience. Highly recommended.

Intense and dense
Revisado: 08-16-16
This is from start to finish an intense memoir, an essay on photography and perception and memory, and history of the South and race relations. Towards the end it grows quite macabre in its description of the Body Farm, where human corpses are laid out in the landscape in order to study their disintegration -- and for Mann to photograph. Be sure to download the companion PDF file to view a large selection of reasonably well-reproduced photos. Mann does an excellent job of reading her text.

Fine overview of the life, but the music quality is unacceptable.
Revisado: 08-06-16
Siepmann's text is interesting and objective, and I find his narration pleasant and intelligent. But the musical examples, drawn from the Naxos catalog, and which comprise about half of this audiobook, are terribly distorted. The Naxos recordings are actually quite good, but unfortunately the engineers didn't insert them (or so I guess) correctly here.
