A fictional story that can offer real support
Revisado: 03-19-24
This story was well-written. Allows the reader to explore an understanding of mental illness & all the people that are affected by it. Especially, the caregivers who exhaust themselves in attempts to help, the loved ones that are in denial, the genetic implications & the fact that it’s a lifetime struggle.
This story reveals important connections between the hurdles with alcohol addiction, with depression & the loved ones that are adversely impacted.
The comparisons to slavery & mental illness were respectfully cadenced.
If you or anyone you know has any connection to mental illness, this book may provide useful insight.

Just when I was annoyed by the main character’s seemingly oblivious demeanor, I began to figure out the twists. I recommend this audiobook.

A story most families can connect with
Revisado: 03-05-24
It took 3 chapters for me to get into this book. However, once I did, I was all in. Most people can identify with the secrets & rivalries that presented in this story. The writing shines a light on the real possibility of and importance of forgiveness & healing within families. Though the narrator has a nice voice, I didn’t care for as the narrator for this book. Her voice didn’t match the description of the sisters. Overall, it’s a good story & I recommend it.

A matter of fact tragedy
Revisado: 02-16-24
I enjoyed this story & creative writing. The story captured the matter of fact manner that many people today use to demonstrate their emotions. With poetic aloofness; glossing over pain & tragedy as if sorrow & regret don’t deserve to have their spotlight. But instead, should be brushed off with satirical indifference. The references to the guilt of indiscretions were sprinkled in well. The book was short, but could easily be adapted into a 2 hour film. The talented Tessa Thompson would play the character she narrated for brilliantly!

Touré Wallace and Niomi Spencer were close friends at Finley College, the prestigious HBCU they attended. The attraction that simmered between them every semester was a question they never got to ask or answer before soaring ambitions launched them to opposite corners of the world. Both chased their dreams of grit and glamor as high-profile journalists. They got it all...except a shot at being more than friends. Years later, Touré is an award-winning investigative journalist and Niomi is America's most popular morning-show host, but they both feel like something’s missing.

Revisado: 02-07-24
Saying I thoroughly enjoyed this book isn’t enough. JPS could easily be a holistic health therapist .
This book spoke to my soul. Not as a fan of the author, her family & public-figured friends. But, as a daughter, woman, wife, mother & friend navigating life in the physical with spiritual experiences.
I NEVER feel a need to re-read a book, but this audiobook I will replay. There are lots of nuggets to explore on trauma, parenting, friendship, marriage, accountability, healing and more. Even the tone of JPS’ voice is soothing. I’ve been recommending it constantly.
To reject this book or anything based on the loud buzz of the masses is an act of thievery against Self. Experience it & then decide what’s good for you.
Oddly, in Chapter 19 around 24 min I could hear slight feedback. Not sure what it was. Sounded like quiet farts. LOL.

Revisado: 01-29-24
I enjoyed the first two books more because the storytelling flowed. This book felt rushed as though there was an obligation for completing on the line. The chapters didn’t flow well. There was a lot of repetition in character and relationship descriptions in various chapters. For me, it was just ok overall.
