Historia
Sasha has had it. She cannot bring herself to respond to another inane, “urgent” email or participate in the corporate employee joyfulness program. She hasn’t seen her friends in months. Sex? Seems like a lot of effort. Even cooking dinner takes far too much planning. Sasha has hit a wall. Armed with good intentions to drink kale smoothies, try yoga, and find peace, she heads to the seaside resort she loved as a child. But it’s the off season, the hotel is in a dilapidated shambles, and she has to share the beach with the only other occupant: a grumpy guy named Finn.

Light and humerous!
Revisado: 05-08-24
I especially liked the beginning because it describes so well modern work life and then such a funny reaction to it by Sasha. The description of the hotel was fun too. The light humor was just what I needed during these days when all the news is negative.

A Memoir We Should All Read
Revisado: 01-26-23
Javier's experience shows us how hard the journey is for many migrants. It was important to me that he read his own memoir and that many things the travelers said to one another weren't translated for readers who only speak English. That helps us, as readers, feel Javier's unease about what was going on among adults and what was going to happen next. It was hard to stop listening when I needed to do other things because I wanted to know what was going to happen next. This is an important story to share.

In the stirring, highly anticipated first volume of his presidential memoirs, Barack Obama tells the story of his improbable odyssey from young man searching for his identity to leader of the free world, describing in strikingly personal detail both his political education and the landmark moments of the first term of his historic presidency - a time of dramatic transformation and turmoil.

Behind the Scenes
Revisado: 11-23-22
It was interesting to hear what was going on at the White House during Barack Obama's first term. The reader gets a sense of what burdens the President carries on a daily basis and how the job affects his family. You also see how much news media hype hurts people who are trying to do their jobs to protect the country and improve the lives of the average family. One of the most interesting parts of the book is learning about the personalities and issues of foreign leaders.

Beach Read
Revisado: 07-07-22
In an article about this book, Jennifer Weiner said she used to despise the term "beach read" because her books weren't disposable fluff. This book isn't fluff because it has a good plot. However, what makes it a beach read for me is the unnecessary quantity of descriptive sex. It takes away from the story rather than adding to it. It would be a much better book if the author (or publisher) were willing to trust the imagination of the reader.
I was also distracted by the narrator's inability to pronounce the d-sound in words like couldn't, wouldn't and didn't which were used frequently.
I did enjoy the story, and others may like the things that I didn't.

I have exactly 5 hours and 10 minutes to get from Boston to New York City or the professional opportunity of a lifetime disappears. My only travel option? The second to last seat on a discount bus. Across from the bathroom. Wearing last night’s clothes (don’t ask). All worth it if I can make it in time.

Fun Going Along for the Ride
Revisado: 04-06-22
In these stressful times, it was great to listen to a story about ordinary people experiencing ordinary stresses in their lives. I felt like I was on the bus eavesdropping on a really good conversation.

Always More to Learn
Revisado: 01-13-22
This emotional story will always be an important and timely one. It helps all people understand a little more about one another. I hope it will help all of us talk about racism because that's the way to a better world. It was good because it was hard to listen to.

Robotic Narrator
Revisado: 01-05-22
The story was simple but enjoyable. The narrator was somewhat robotic and did a poor job on the Texas accent of some of the characters. However, it was a relaxing read in the middle of a pandemic.

In Lies My Teacher Told Me, James W. Loewen brings history alive in all its complexity and ambiguity. Beginning with pre-Columbian history and ranging over characters and events as diverse as Reconstruction, Helen Keller, the first Thanksgiving, the My Lai massacre, 9/11, and the Iraq War, Loewen offers an eye-opening critique of existing textbooks, and a wonderful retelling of American history as it should - and could - be taught to American students.

Annoying Narration, Valid Points
Revisado: 12-18-19
The narration of this book is annoying to listen to. The narrator sounds whiny and snooty. Having taught from one of the history books the author critiques, I can see some of his points. However, he has little understanding about teaching students younger than college-aged. He seems surprised that his college freshman don't think like history majors. High school is an overview of many subjects. By the time a student is a college senior, majoring in history, he can expect them to have the insights he expects from them. Some of his points about what is left out of history texts and the slant of the publishers is valid. A good high school teacher should be knowledgeable and well read so he or she can teach students to think critically.

Hendrik Groen may be old, but he is far from dead and isn't planning to be buried any time soon. Granted, his daily strolls are getting shorter because his legs are no longer willing, and he has to visit his doctor more than he'd like. Technically speaking he is...elderly. But surely there is more to life at his age than weak tea and potted geraniums? Hendrik sets out to write an exposé: a year in the life of his care home in Amsterdam, revealing all its ups and downs.

An Amusing Look at Aging
Revisado: 12-18-19
This book was a lot of fun and had me laughing a number of times. It provides a humorous look at aging, but also a view of the emotional response to the loss of good friends and the worry when an elderly friend is hospitalized. It shows those of us in younger old age that there is a future ahead that can be filled with interesting outings shared with good friends, new relationships, and acceptance of our eventual end of life.
