Historia
Our brains do their best to help us out, but every so often they can be real assholes - having meltdowns, getting addicted to things, or shutting down completely at the worst possible moments. Your brain knows it's not good to do these things, but it can't help it sometimes - especially if it's obsessing about trauma it can't overcome. That's where this life-changing book comes in. With humor, patience, science, and lots of good-ole swearing, Dr. Faith explains what's going on in your skull, and talks you through the process of retraining your brain to respond appropriately....

The worst audio quality.
Revisado: 09-15-24
I don't know if this wasn't edited, but the quality of the audio is horrendous. Content is good. The actual narration isn't bad, but this sounds like the editing cutouts instead of the actual finished version of the audio.

Historia
The Troubles. A quaint name for a horrific period in the galaxy's history. A period whose atrocities were superseded only by the terror of the Savage Wars that had come before. Almost no corner of the galaxy was spared a taste of terrible war, cutthroat intrigue…and remorseless death. In the aftermath, this battered galaxy now longs for peace and stability. The Republic, now reformed, seeks to govern by the rule of law. But no matter how sincere the reform, how earnest and well-meaning the ruler, some worlds refuse to place their destiny in the hands of others. Ever again.

A lot of inconsistencies from prior season's.
Revisado: 08-10-24
I adore GE. There are a lot of inconsistencies in this book though. One small example: KRS-88 chose his identifier in tin man. There was no KRS war bot like Krash. I like the story, I do... But I can't when things get pronounced differently. It would only take an hour to quickly learn how previous narrators have pronounced Kima or Utopion. It kills me. It's a great story. Is it set in a different time line? If so, okay. Makes sense. Otherwise, the disappointment is real.

The enemy unknowingly opened a portal to the Netherworld, and our world’s only wizard somehow managed to close it. Unfortunately, something got through. Something big. A dragon. Now Kaz Wolfe, with help from his dog Duke who is channeling the spirit of a wizard from ancient Babylon, and with no help from Azib the Cowardly Genie, must find the dragon before someone gets a cellphone video of the thing, and the world learns that magic is real. I am not impressed.
Revisado: 06-15-23
Craig Alanson is a terrible writer. It's not that he doesn't have good ideas for stories - he does. But he lacks in subtlety and originality in how he brings those stories to life. The best authors introduce you to a story by telling you the story. There is none of that introspection that's done solely as a data dump for the readers. Craig relies on that heavily, and it's obvious and asinine. The dialogue is lame, repetitive and unrealistic, the characters are flat and the dynamic is reminiscent of Joe & Skippy. It worked in Columbus Day et al because it was new. In this case, it's played out.
We have Wizard Joe Kazimir and multiple Skippies - ball busting djinn Skippy, dangerous yet loyal Angry Feline Skippy and drunk dialing at 3am while running a Defrag talking dog Skippy. It's exhausting. Listen to or read a few books by truly great authors and then try to pick this up, and it will hurt your brain.
Craig's Novel Checklist:
Arrogant super intelligent being insulting the main character while demanding to be revered? Check.
Characters saying "What the fu---" before stopping and changing their language? Check.
Breaking it down Barney style? Yes, that's in here, too.
My eyes are stuck in the back of my head from rolling them so hard. Again, the story isn't bad but OMG the writing is horrendous. Lord Bray can save even the yellow pages though, and does a beautiful job with the drivel he's been given. I, however, am not amused.

Historia
Pi Patel is an unusual boy. The son of a zookeeper, he has an encyclopedic knowledge of animal behavior and a fervent love of stories and practices not only his native Hinduism but also Christianity and Islam. When Pi is 16, his family emigrates from India to North America aboard a Japanese cargo ship along with their zoo animals bound for new homes. The ship sinks. Pi finds himself alone in a lifeboat, his only companions a hyena, an orangutan, a wounded zebra, and Richard Parker, a 450 pound Bengal tiger.

An amazing story of survival, faith, human psychology and a unique method of dealing with trauma. Beautifully written. Masterfully narrated, though sometimes the adult Pi Patel speaks with less than Indian. I have no idea why it took me to long to pick this one up.

Historia
The galaxy is doomed. Monkeys may be clever and too stubborn to give up, but Skippy The Idiot Who Got Played knows the harsh truth: this is a fight he can’t win. The odds are not only stacked against him, he was designed not to win this fight. Maybe he can salvage some faint memory of the civilizations that inhabit the galaxy, but those beings are doomed. Doomed. Including the Merry Band of Pirates.

This is a lame way to end a series.
Revisado: 12-10-22
This was an ultimate let down.
There is no resolution to the conflict between the spiders and kitties.
There is no resolution for Joe constantly having to save the world.
Each book up to this has been a series of escalating problems, where there are lots of unanswered questions. This book answers most of those questions, but doesn't resolve any of the major conflict that's existed for the entire series.
Its disappointing. It feels anticlimactic. It doesn't feel like the end of the series, just another ex force book. I'm displeased. It's not a bad book, but it's not a good way to end a series at all.

Historia
Six days ago, astronaut Mark Watney became one of the first people to walk on Mars. Now, he's sure he'll be the first person to die there. After a dust storm nearly kills him and forces his crew to evacuate while thinking him dead, Mark finds himself stranded and completely alone with no way to even signal Earth that he's alive - and even if he could get word out, his supplies would be gone long before a rescue could arrive. Chances are, though, he won't have time to starve to death. The damaged machinery, unforgiving environment, or plainold "human error" are much more likely to kill him first.

I don't hate the Alan Grofield stories, but this is my least favorite so far. It's far fetched and a little more ridiculous than the others. The narrator is wonderful, which is why I added it to my library. The series as a whole is worth a listen. These are old stories, so keep that in mind when listening, and don't get offended.

Heaven on Earth
Revisado: 05-25-22
I'm not overly religious, but I do enjoy the religious symbolism Brian Fuller creates in the Ash Angels series. Though I thought that this would be the culmination of the story, the epilogue makes it clear that there is more to come. The story is filled with beautiful imagery. R. C. Bray does an amazing job as usual of telling the tale. Excellent job on the current installment.

A wonderful adaptation
Revisado: 03-20-22
This is a beautiful retelling of a fairy tale, turned into a sci-fi space war crossed with a medieval brawl between rival kingdoms. There are a few minor plot holes and sometimes the science is more like magic (hence, fairy tale) but it's a satisfyingly complete novel all on its own. The writing is immaculate. Sometimes scifi books read like they're written by toddlers hammering on keyboards. The story is good, but the writing is meh. Lou has a way with words. This book is art. The narration is perfection. It's absolutely worth your credit.

The problem with lying about having a super weapon is that the bad guys might believe they have nothing to lose by doing something stupid that both sides will regret. Or, they might just call your bluff. Either way, the Merry Band of Pirates need a plan to deal with the Fallout.

I just pinged a relay station and...
Revisado: 12-12-21
... I have good news, awesome news, bad news and meh news.
Did the book where Joe finally got the girl make you want to gag?
Does the constant blatant foreshadowing irritate you?
Did you re-listen to the previous 12 books + the mavericks books and the opera and find yourself irritated by the large number clerical errors, rambling interruptions and nonsensical plot points?
Are you beginning to find the whole "'Joe, it's impossible!', Skippy interrupted. 'Well,' I replied, 'shut up and listen to my idea. What if we duuuuuuh?' Skippy blinked. 'Gah, the dumb monkey is smarter than me again, waaah! My life sucks!'" exceptionally tedious?
The good news:
There are significantly fewer errors in this book. Like, waaay fewer. They're still there they're just less serious and much less frequent. I noted less than five.
The awesome news:
Mr. Alanson listened to readers. Joe still has the girl, but she's not a constant nag and acknowledged that her drama queen bs was a direct result of her not knowing how to be vulnerable in relationships. She has a minor role in this book, but when we see her in action she's back to the Sarge Marge we love and gets to smash. But she still hasn't apologized for lying about needing sunscreen. Also, a lot of the previous plot errors are corrected, mainly by the absent mindedness of Skippy.
The meh news:
Joe doesn't save the day all of the time. Skippy actually comes up with one (maybe two? Idk, that potentially missing chapter) ideas that are fantastic. Also, some of the more obvious suspicions are confirmed. The Maxholxs, for instance, have insisted on their innocence in firing elder weapons for the duration of the war. Anyone with four brain cells could figure out that there must be another active Elder AI messing with things - and bingo! There is.
A lot, but not all, of your questions are answered in Fallout. Mr. Bray is amazing, as always. Mr. Alanson really thought this one through better than books 4-12, which all felt very rushed.
There were some serious laugh out loud guffaws (Jeraptha Diversity Training) and some truly unexpected twists.
If you've considered giving up on the series for any of the reasons mentioned above, don't do it. This book was a refreshingly solid 4.5. I hope the trend continues.
Oh, I'm sorry, what? I forgot the bad news? No, I didn't forget it, it just has a minor spoiler, so I left it for the end. Feel free to stop reading right now. No, seriously, stop reading.
Why are you still here?
Stop. Reading.
Well, you asked for it. I warned you.
The bad news:
There might be an entire chapter missing. There is no explanation of what happens to the crew of Vaklyrie during a major action near the end of the book. They vanish, then they magically show up at the last minute and (REDACTED). With no explanation. It might have been intentional, but it was done poorly.
Don't be mad at me, I seriously told you to stop reading.
