Historia
The story of Donald Trump’s rise to power is the story of a buried American history - buried because people in power liked it that way. It was visible without being seen, influential without being named, ubiquitous without being overt. Sarah Kendzior’s Hiding in Plain Sight pulls back the veil on a history spanning decades, a history of an American autocrat in the making. In doing so, she reveals how our continual loss of freedom, the rise of consolidated corruption, and the secrets behind a burgeoning autocratic United States have been hiding in plain sight for decades.

I loved it all. She did great research and the addition of a little snark is much appreciated. As a former Arbonne consultant (was only in 2 years thank goodness ,) it helps me feel less of a dupe.

Historia
This is the way the world ends: with a nanosecond of computer error in a Defense Department laboratory and a million casual contacts that form the links in a chain letter of death. And here is the bleak new world of the day after: a world stripped of its institutions and emptied of 99 percent of its people. A world in which a handful of panicky survivors choose sides - or are chosen.

Historia
It's nearly Christmas, Julia Devine's favourite time of the year. She's just programmed a wonderful lead into the holidays at Sunny Street Cinema, which leaves her plenty of time to worry about going home to Cumbria for Christmas. Her mum and stepdad are fine, but the thought of spending another holiday with her awful stepsister Becca is enough to make a Scrooge out of anyone. When Becca calls to let her know about the dreamy pilot she's bringing to Christmas lunch, Julia finally snaps and does something very silly.

Historia
Cathy Wilkerson, who famously escaped the Greenwich Village townhouse explosion, here wrestles with the legacy of the movement, at times finding contradictions that many others have avoided: the absence of women’s voices then, and in the retelling; the incompetence and the egos; the hundreds of bombs detonated in protest which caused little loss of life but which were also ineffective in fomenting revolution.

Great insight into 60’s radicalism
Revisado: 05-05-21
I really enjoyed this book. A great look at what it was really like inside the weatherman group !
The critical analysis of how it went wrong is especially relevant now as I feel we are on the verge of another such uprising of activism. I appreciate her spelling out her and the group’s mistakes. I gave the performance 4 stars bc the author stumbles at times. However, once I accepted that she is not a professional voice actor and relaxed into it, I really enjoyed hearing the story in her voice- imperfections and all. It made it all more real and personally meaningful.

Historia
In the winter of 1918, at the height of World War I, history's most lethal influenza virus erupted in an army camp in Kansas, moved east with American troops, then exploded, killing as many as 100 million people worldwide. It killed more people in 24 weeks than AIDS has killed in 24 years, more in a year than the Black Death killed in a century. But this was not the Middle Ages, and 1918 marked the first collision between modern science and epidemic disease.

I liked it, but....
Revisado: 07-03-20
Writing was pretty melodramatic. The descriptions of scientists was like a soap opera! Lol
The depth of research was what kept me listening. I really enjoyed hearing about the day to day life of people in 1918 and how intertwined politics and media of the time became entangled with the virus spread. ( It is eerily similar to 2020!) I ended up ok with the dramatic writing/narrating bc it made it seem like a fictional story.
Is ironic listening during the COVID 19 pandemic bc the US basically failed at all of the author’s suggestions, but was still an oddly reassuring listen. (Maybe bc answers were eventually found? And that at least now most media is telling us how horrific COVID is?)

This book felt more like the beginning of a new series rather than the last of one. It also was more soft-core porn than romance novel at times 😄 I missed Alex, mark, and Sam.

Historia
Countess Ellen Olenska, separated from her European husband, returns to old New York society. She bears with her an independence and an awareness of life which stirs the educated sensitivity of the charming Newland Archer, engaged to be married to her cousin, May Welland. Though he accepts the society's standards and rules he is acutely aware of their limitations. He knows May will assure him a conventional future but Ellen, scandalously separated from her husband, forces Archer to question his values and beliefs.

Engrossing story, rich and eloquent narration
Revisado: 06-25-15
Masterful re-telling of a classic. The narrator's thoughtful and specific attention to detail bring Edith Wharton's scathing review of her own society alive. I recommend for any Austen fan or fan of classic romantic fiction.

Historia
Winter is coming. Such is the stern motto of House Stark, the northernmost of the fiefdoms that owe allegiance to King Robert Baratheon in far-off King's Landing. There Eddard Stark of Winterfell rules in Robert's name. Far to the north, behind the towering Wall, lie savage Wildings and worse - unnatural things relegated to myth during the centuries-long summer, but proving all too real and all too deadly in the turning of the season. Yet a more immediate threat lurks to the south, where Jon Arryn, the Hand of the King, has died under mysterious circumstances....
