Historia
How did Richard Ford's cat influence his work as a novelist? Creativity is an elusive subject. We enjoy its fruits - movies, novels, paintings, songs - but rarely are we privy to what happens in the creative process. In Spark, Julie Burstein traces the roots of some of the twenty-first century's most influential and creative thinkers, including Joyce Carol Oates, Yo-Yo Ma, David Milch, Isabel Allende, and Joshua Redman. Burstein pulls back the curtain to reveal the sources of these artists' inspiration and the processes that bring their work into being.

I wanted to like this so much
Revisado: 06-27-11
admittedly have not listened to entire thing, but I can't bear it!
I love studio 360 (radio series this was based on), so I was so happy to see this was available on audible. sadly, audiobook features way too many clips from the show (I already heard them, and the clips feel like lazy cop-out); also feels very disjointed as a whole group of interviews/ whatever this is. not as much as I had hoped of a basic overview of creative types and how they operate. there is a little of this, but not enough. I mean, once could just read the Artist's Way and get every revelation these folks seem to have in the first chapter. I know literary types eschew all self-help, so it amuses me to find the authors so shocked to figure out exactly what other gurus for cultivating creativity seemed to figure out looong ago. I wanted to love, but I would just download the podcast and call it a day, (PS what is up with crappy cover designs for creativity books. can't help but wonder as a book cover designer myself. oo a light bulb! sigh.)

amazing audio / first review
Revisado: 06-27-11
haven't written a review before. felt the need to write one here--this was one of the best audiobooks I've ever listened to, bought it maybe 5 yrs ago and have listened to many since. still love this one. hated for the novel to end. story about a woman's friendship--very intimate, almost like lovers (as a lesbian and close friend to plenty of straight ladies, I found this aspect especially truthful--as female friends very often toe the line super close to lover)
anyway, beautifully narrated by author. what else...
i suppose I should mention other audio titles I have hated to have end. All sedaris (Amy and David) titles, and that first book in Strain series. pretty much it.

very funny and interesting
Revisado: 03-08-10
I found this funny. Yes, it's a little light at times, and self indulgent. But that's the point. It's a little more literary that Sex and the City...but not much. Definitely entertaining though.

Historia
How does one keep from going through their comfortable, prosperous adult life unconsciously? How do we get ourselves out of the foreground of our thoughts and achieve compassion? This audiobook version of a David Foster Wallace commencement speech, read by his sister, Amy Wallace-Havens, captures his electric intellect as well as his grace in attention to others. After his death, it became a treasured piece of writing reprinted in The Wall Street Journal and the London Times, commented on endlessly in blogs, and emailed from friend to friend.

DFW is not the reader!
Revisado: 03-08-10
I was so excited to find this, I neglected to check to make sure the author was the one actually reading. I mean, it was a speech he gave, and I have heard bits of the audio before so I just assumed. sigh.
His sister does a goof job reading, I was just really disappointed it wasn't the full audio from the speech.

not bad, Christian viewpoint is hard to get around
Revisado: 10-19-09
This is interesting, helpful, but I find myself annoyed by the overarching Christian perspective. Also find the authors slightly condescending. I found the book DIFFICULT CONVERSATIONS much more helpful. Audiobook for above book is done very well. I also have the hard copy and find it a good companion for audiobook.

the woman is close to genius.
Revisado: 02-03-09
laugh out loud hilarious. I had no idea she was so funny. I can't imagine why anyone would not enjoy this...maybe other folks were hoping for something more princess Leiah? I am not a huge Star Wars fan, not that I hate it. anyhow, my other comic faves have included David Sedaris, Dan Savage, Paula Poundstone, Sarah Silverman.

Kurt Vonnegut's absurdist classic introduces us to Billy Pilgrim, a man who becomes 'unstuck in time' after he is abducted by aliens from the planet Tralfamadore. In a plot-scrambling display of virtuosity, we follow Pilgrim simultaneously through all phases of his life, concentrating on his (and Vonnegut's) shattering experience as an American prisoner of war who witnesses the firebombing of Dresden.

great book, annoying narrator
Revisado: 12-18-08
Ethan Hawke sounds like he's trying to emulate that guy who does the coming attractions at the movies. The book is insanely good though, of course.
