In the remote villages of Southern Epheria, still reeling from the tragic loss of his brother, Calen Bryer prepares for The Proving - a test of courage and skill that not all survive. Historia
A soldier raised as heir to an empire, Zarrah is motivated by two truths. The first is that the Veliant family murdered her mother. And the second is that her pursuit of vengeance will put every last one of them in their graves. The Endless War between Maridrina and Valcotta has raged for generations, leaving thousands of Zarrah’s people dead and countless more orphaned. So when she’s given command of the contested city of Nerastis, Zarrah is prepared to do whatever it takes to destroy the Maridrinian forces who oppose her. And to kill the Veliant prince who leads them.

Revisado: 05-04-23
I haven’t read any Barbara Cartland but I’m guessing this is just a more explicit version.
I listened to the first 2 books basically because I had a couple of weeks for my credits to come through and they were free. The first 2 can’t have been terrible because obviously I listened to them, they’re still pretty bad though. But this…….. oh my I’m embarrassed for everyone involved with this steaming pile of S?!t.
What’s even more baffling is that there are people giving this arse gravy 5 stars.
I know if you don’t have anything nice to say then you shouldn’t say anything at all, but I’m sorry I think me pointing out what a load of drivel this piece of trash is is a community service.

Trying too hard
Revisado: 11-03-19
The First in the series was ok , ok enough to get the second in the series. Big mistake it just tries too hard to get too much in. Not for me, probably didn't help that I'd just re listened to Joe Abercrombie's first law series. Too big a step down in writing and narration.

Woeful.
Revisado: 01-19-16
What could have made this a 4 or 5-star listening experience for you?
An original story, a better story, better narrators. I could go on.
Has The Axe and the Throne turned you off from other books in this genre?
No just this series, author and narrators
Who would you have cast as narrator instead of Matt Cowlrick and Melissa Chambers ?
I don't know, some random dude off the street, crap stories seem to get crap narrators I spose. .
What reaction did this book spark in you? Anger, sadness, disappointment?
Disappointment, bewilderment, did I read/hear the same book as some of the other reviewers of this book?
Any additional comments?
Tried to get my money back on this one but audible won't let me. If you like or love Steven Erikson, George R Martin, Abercrombie or even Jordan then do yourself a favour and don't waste your credit on this dross.

In this “deftly and originally executed” (Booklist) New York Times best-selling novel, Vaelin Al Sorna must help his Queen reclaim her Realm. Only his enemy has a dangerous new collaborator, one with powers darker than Vaelin has ever encountered...“The Ally is there, but only ever as a shadow, unexplained catastrophe or murder committed at the behest of a dark vengeful spirit. Sorting truth from myth is often a fruitless task". After fighting back from the brink of death, Queen Lyrna is determined to repel the invading Volarian army.

What he said....
Revisado: 08-08-15
Would you try another book from Anthony Ryan and/or Steven Brand?
No, the author has lost me after that disjointed effort, also the narrator can't seem to differentiate between characters.
Would you ever listen to anything by Anthony Ryan again?
No no and no, the author has lost complete interest in his work so why should I be interested.
Who would you have cast as narrator instead of Steven Brand?
I don't think anyone could polish this turd.
What reaction did this book spark in you? Anger, sadness, disappointment?
Absolute disappointment.
Any additional comments?
