Historia
On the surface, the Victorian age is one of propriety, industry, prudishness and piety. But scratch the surface and you’ll find scandal, sadism, sex, madness, malice and murder. Presented by Stephen Fry, this series delves deep into a period of time we think we know, to discover an altogether darker reality. The stories we’re told offer a different perspective on an era which underwent massive social change. As education, trade, technology and culture blossomed, why was there an undercurrent of the ‘forbidden’ festering beneath Victorian society?

Historia
In The Bleak Midwintertells the whole story of ten-year-old Merrie Frances Callahan's 1975 abduction, and the present day murders that are somehow intricately linked to that event. SA Constance Mandalay is assigned what appears to be a 7-year-old cold case that echos the events of the 35-year-old child abduction. Unfortunately for all involved, the case heats up for a short time each year with a brutal murder that appears eerily staged, and occurs under impossible circumstances.

I read the original short story Merry Axemas before taking on the first of the Agent Constance Mandalay series. Having recently gotten into audiobooks as my standby for obtaining my literary fix, and having read the Rowan Gant Investigation series by MR Sellars, I was quite excited to find this particular story available as an audiobook. I was not disappointed. The story was incredibly compelling, thrilling and shocking, as all the best thrillers should be. The narration was well done and allowed me to become engrossed in the story almost as well as reading would have done. I felt the narrator really captured the stream of consciousness of Agent Mandalay, and allowed for the story to really envelop the reader. No spoilers here, but what an amazing read/listen.the attention to detail in the crime scenes, the character development, all lead to an ending that is certain not to disappoint. I look forward to more of the MR Sellars books to make their audio debut.
