Had high hopes

I haven’t been disappointed in any of Hazelwood’s stories until now. I hadn’t realized it was a YA book when I started it, but quickly realized it. It was hard to keep up with at some points with off of the “hip” references. Also, talk about giving a girl an equivalent of book blue balls. The MFC constantly talked about sex, made it know she wasn’t shy about it and after the book built up and built up the tension between the main characters, there wasn’t a follow through on their relationship.
Definitely not her best work.

Way better than most lit/rpg

The story, writing and narration were a nice change of pace from the norm. The aspect I enjoyed the most as compared to most lit/rpg was the lack of constant exhausting stat listings. I feel like a lot of authors focus on stat updates and long lists to the point it seems they are padding run time. Plus the stat lists get so ridiculously long it can take 5-10 mins for some authors to get through them. This book has very little of that, and even makes a point early on of stating lots of stats loses player emersion. Really enjoyed the book.

Really wanted to enjoy this

I’ve been interested in this book for a while and finally found the opportunity to listen. Though the information is good, the narrator’s delivery sounds like the teacher from Ferris Bueller‘s Day off calling role. The book is not written with a great deal of dynamism, and so the narration combined allows the mind to wander.

Got bored

Consistently wonderful and engaging

The story is engaging and well written as are the characters. The world feels very fleshed out and deep in lore. Enemies abound, and the greatest power on Calidore is not magic, but instead, one man’s ability to delegate, coerce, scheme, and bullshit his way to victory.

A slow burn with a long fuse and a very small pop.

The book is well written and the narrator is pleasant to listen to, but the story itself seems to drone on without anything of significance occurring until the the very end. The manner in which it’s written suggests it’s meant as a mood piece but it’s described as horror. Which it is certainly not. It’s barely anything at all.

Problems but good overall

Overall the story and performance were excellent, but either the recording or the download was faulty. There must’ve been 10 or 12 time skips throughout the story and I’m not sure how much story was missed.

Fantastic!

Absolutely fantastic book, everything you look forward to from a new book by Nick Cutter. As enjoyable as "The Deep", which was so good I find myself consistently unsatisfied with the majority of other authors books in this genre.

Great overarching story

By now, Jordan's extremely long winded approach to inane and/or pointless conversations about men and women complaining about each other has surpassed the point of tiresome. But by now you're in it for the long haul, so just power through the word sludge and enjoy the story behind it.

Can't say enough good things!

The writing, pacing, story, narrator, characters, schemes, and whatever else, this book has it all and it's fantastic! One of the best series I've ever read in any genre!
