A great historical novel, giving understanding to the psyche and situation of young British men during WWI. The gay relationship and obstacles for them at the time is portrayed straight-forwardly and with heart.

My rating was going to be a strong 4/5 until the last act (~2hrs) which elevated the whole novel to 5/5 for me! Love it when a story finishes strong!

Perfect narration by Christian Coulson.

The first Deverry series

These four books comprise the first part of Katharine Kerr's Deverry Cycle and can be read as one complete series.

I first read these books as a teenager about 28 years ago, so it was nice to re-visit them and see if they were as good as I remembered. I'm glad to say that I was not disappointed! This is solid, classic fantasy about reincarnation, dark and light magic, elves, lords and ladies, and written by a female author which is a plus.

The narrator does a wonderful, consistent job throughout the four books! I listened at x1.2 speed.

Trigger warning for SA in book 2 (against a male side character and mentions of previous child SA), and book 3 (against a female main character).

Two great short stories!

The first one (4 stars) is a bit longer and will stay in my mind, I think. It reminded me of N.K. Jemisin's Broken Earth trilogy.

The second one (3 stars) is a modern telekinesis story which would be a great premise for a movie, it left me wanting more.

Sweet MM romance

I liked this book a bit better than the previous one and it was a nice finish to the series! In this one, we follow the romance between former NHL player Westly (Asher's big brother) and the university Math professor Jasper.

It starts out contemptuously, followed by a brief fake relationship storyline at Jasper's high school reunion. It's entertaining but with some depth, since Jasper comes face to face with his former bullies. Having a handsome hockey player on his arm looking out for him doesn't hurt, and it's a satisfactory storyline!

The books in the series can be read as standalones but has recurring side-characters, some of them main couple characters from previous books. Not the strongest hockey romance series I've read, but good enough for an easy listen (NSFW warning for some spicy chapters).

Excellent production

Peter Dinklage in particular shines with this performance of famed private detective Hércule Poirot. This was my first experience of Poirot and I will definitely be reading and watching more!

Hallmark story

You need to stretch your imagination to accept the dynamics of this love story and be okay with the creepiness of the insistent male. I had a hard time seeing the romance in a boy (and later man) having decided from childhood that he is going to marry his sister's best friend. Especially since they hardly see each other as adults. But the short story did start with her holding him as a newborn, so maybe the implication is that he imprinted on her... 😅

Still an enjoyable listen if you think of it as a Hallmark Christmas movie kind of story. NSFW warning for one short sex scene near the end.

The prose is great as usual with Ali Hazelwood, and the audio narration excellent!

A bit too insta-lovey and without drama. Some angsty insecurities were introduced but never became an obstacle. More spice than plot in this one!

Not as great as expected

Better go into this novel expecting more vibes only, not a comprehensible plot. There's a lot of atmosphere and descriptions but not much leads anywhere. The novel probably makes for some great discussions in literary classes, but it's not the kind of book I'd recommend to friends and family.

Easygoing romance

I liked this installment in the series good enough. Especially the first half was great since the story is about two characters from previous books - Hunter's twin brother and one of the hockey teammates - realizing they're into guys too. But once they've gotten together things became less interesting.
