Historia
Jocasta is just fifteen when she is told that she must marry the King of Thebes, an old man she has never met. Her life has never been her own, and nor will it be, unless she outlives her strange, absent husband. Ismene is the same age when she is attacked in the palace she calls home. Since the day of her parents' tragic deaths a decade earlier, she has always longed to feel safe with the family she still has. But with a single act of violence, all that is about to change. With the turn of these two events, a tragedy is set in motion. But not as we’ve known it.

Fantastically enjoyable; uncannily disturbing
Revisado: 05-30-24
Poetic that it’s narrated by the dharma scientist from Lost (who reads fabulously by the way). This is as surreal as that show, but as real as human history. Singularly literary, with belly laughing jokes à la Douglas Adams, and horrifically disturbing sequences, it’s the most literarily significant piece I’ve read in many years.

Historia
Inspired by her research for the hit podcast Ultra, Rachel Maddow charts the rise of a wild American strain of authoritarianism that has been alive on the far-right edge of our politics for the better part of a century. Before and even after our troops had begun fighting abroad in World War II, a clandestine network flooded the country with disinformation aimed at sapping the strength of the U.S. war effort and persuading Americans that our natural alliance was with the Axis, not against it.

Historia
Six days ago, astronaut Mark Watney became one of the first people to walk on Mars. Now, he's sure he'll be the first person to die there. After a dust storm nearly kills him and forces his crew to evacuate while thinking him dead, Mark finds himself stranded and completely alone with no way to even signal Earth that he's alive - and even if he could get word out, his supplies would be gone long before a rescue could arrive. Chances are, though, he won't have time to starve to death. The damaged machinery, unforgiving environment, or plainold "human error" are much more likely to kill him first.

Historia
Derick Lugo had never been hiking. He certainly couldn't imagine going more than a day without manicuring his goatee. But with a job cut short and no immediate plans, this fixture of the New York comedy scene began to think about what he might do with months of free time. He had heard of the Appalachian Trail, but he had never seriously considered attempting to hike all 2,184.2 miles of it. Suddenly he found himself asking, Could he do it?

Delightful adventure one-off
Revisado: 09-16-23
I’m glad I know about Derick Lugo‘s experience now. It reminds me so much of Bonnie Tsui’s “Why We Swim,” I consider it the trail version. Derick is not the narrator of the decade, and sometimes reads like he’s reading somebody else’s work, but you know he’s not. You know it’s his voice. He might have gotten help with the writing, but you know it’s his description of his own adventure and in that way he takes you right there with him the entire time. It’s a fantastic glimpse into his experience and a traveling of the Appalachian Trail without walking. And like Bonnie in the ocean, I’m grateful for the opportunity to tag along.

Historia
In her hit Netflix comedy special Baby Cobra, an eight-month pregnant Ali Wong resonated so strongly that she even became a popular Halloween costume. Wong told the world her remarkably unfiltered thoughts on marriage, sex, Asian culture, working women, and why you never see new mom comics on stage but you sure see plenty of new dads.

Story okay, performance amazing of course
Revisado: 08-30-23
Obviously memoirs are innately self-indulgent, that’s kind of the point. This one was a little much in that regard - a lot of memoirs touch back to life, this really is only insight into hers, and if that equates to living “your best life” that’s incidental.
That all being said, it doesn’t matter. It’s a book version of her comedy specials and she performs it - it’s spectacularly hilarious and the self-indulgence blurs into pure entertainment. I’ll listen again when I need to laugh hard, I’ll just def skip the husband mini-memoir at the end (not actually an “afterward”).
Really all it needed was a more accurately descriptive subtitle and would be five stars all around. Expected more real life insights because of that, but overall it was still fantastically entertaining, funny, and at many parts heartfelt.

Historia
Ensign Andrew Dahl has just been assigned to the Universal Union Capital Ship Intrepid, flagship of the Universal Union since the year 2456. Life couldn’t be better…until Andrew begins to pick up on the facts that (1) every Away Mission involves some kind of lethal confrontation with alien forces; (2) the ship’s captain, its chief science officer, and the handsome Lieutenant Kerensky always survive these confrontations; and (3) at least one low-ranked crew member is, sadly, always killed.

Surprisingly deep, thoughtful, and sweet
Revisado: 07-28-23
Indeed shockingly deep, was not expecting that much depth after the pleasantly light kaiju preservation society. I mean sure this is about redshirts, and there’s enough comedy about that, but it’s also an exploration of purpose, creativity, singularity, decisions, hierarchies, family, humanity. Very worth the quick read.

Slow, but crazy by the end
Revisado: 05-02-23
Slow to a point where it simply counts as Greek mythology content, entertainment-wise. But the end sequences are so crazy it ends up a true and satisfying Greek tragedy. Not sure how much of that is rooted in the real lore, and how much Saint added, but it is craaazy! Made it all worth it.

Bizarre, campy, heartfelt. Classic Elvira!
Revisado: 11-02-22
I expected this to be interesting and entertaining, which it was. I did not necessarily expect to resonate with so much of it. A real story of a real life, but connected with the grandeur of Hollywood, and the stories behind all the classic camp and macabre. She does not shy away from the celebrations, nor the tender, raw, or tragic moments. Well written and narrated as well!
