Lots of information from a robotic narrator
Revisado: 11-13-24
I struggled with this listen because the narration was so robotic in nature it was really hard to truly listen to and enjoy the content. The book is helpful and I’ll look into following the author for more tips.

Historia
Since the late 1980's, The Square had been one of the most important clubs in New York for the alt-comedy scene. But before that it was something much darker and is now a place where evil lingers, waiting for a chance to spill blood. After a night of killing on stage, four comics find themselves in a desperate situation as the spirits of the past come out to play, and a fight for laughs becomes a fight for survival in the most unlikely of places.

Far fall from Fantasticland
Revisado: 08-08-23
Fantasticland was so clever, captivating and creative, it’s easy to understand that it will be a difficult book for Bockoven to top, but this book was so disappointing it’s hard to believe the same author even wrote it. Why a comedy bar when he so obviously isn’t a comedian?? I didn’t laugh once throughout the entire book. The narrator was horrible, the jokes weren’t funny, the “humor” was painful to listen to. I was so looking forward to this book. I’ll definitely wait a while and actually consider the reviews before I use a credit on his next book.

Historia
A Mouthful of Air is a compassionate and wrenching portrait of Julie Davis, a young wife and mother torn between the love she feels for her family and the voice in her head that insists they’d be better off without her. We meet Julie several weeks after her suicide attempt, on the eve of her son’s first birthday. Grateful to be alive, Julie tries her best to appreciate every moment — “this tree, that passing car, the pretzel guy up ahead on the corner. She has, for whatever reason, been given a second chance” — but her emotional demons are unrelenting.

Cringe
Revisado: 08-03-23
The continuous hinting at incest and child abuse wasn’t necessary. Why did the author include the scene of the protagonist and her son? What was the point of that??

Incredibly Boring
Revisado: 01-31-23
Even for a love story this was a BORE. Nearly a smut book but the sex scenes were too spaced out to even call it that. The storyline was weak and dragged. I tried to grit and bear it but it became too painful. I called it quits about 2/3 in and read online cliff notes with spoilers to see how it ended. Grateful I didn’t finish, I didn’t miss anything. I already preordered her next release and I’m really nervous I might’ve made a mistake.

Disappointing
Revisado: 09-17-22
I was really into the beginning of the book - there was so much potential despite the annoying, panicky narration. Unfortunately, this plot takes one of those ridiculous turns that makes you want to slap everyone multiple times. Hesitant to give this author another try.

Historia
Eight-year-old orphan Beth Harmon is quiet, sullen, and by all appearances unremarkable. That is, until she plays her first game of chess. Her senses grow sharper, her thinking clearer, and for the first time in her life she feels herself fully in control. By the age of 16, she's competing for the US Open championship. But as Beth hones her skills on the professional circuit, the stakes get higher, her isolation grows more frightening, and the thought of escape becomes all the more tempting.

Eh
Revisado: 11-10-21
Overall, I did enjoy the book, but like many other reviews, I don’t understand the author’s insistence on including peer rape in the book? Perhaps he was trying to set up an explanation of Beth’s addictions throughout her youth but she had plenty of trauma that justified her vices. Also - pretty sure it takes more than a few months in the gym to overcome addiction. The author seemed to want to approach the topic of childhood trauma and the results of that but leaves much to be desired.

Take a shot every time she says...
Revisado: 11-03-20
“Normal”, “Context”, “Accelerator”, “Brakes”.
Who is this woman’s editor? Why didn’t anyone tell her she was essentially saying the same few sentences a few hundred times?? You could listen to the first 3 chapters if you want information that might be novel. Besides that it’s really - boring... Towards the middle to end of the book I started skipping chapters to find new content. Alas! She was always talking about the same few topics - context, accelerator, brakes, and how normal everyone is. What a waste of Credit.
