Jonice Webb is a trailblazer. I have been reading self-help books since I was in my late teens and trying to put my finger on what is really causing my issues in adulthood. The self-help space is riddled with what I call "rabbit holes" - authors focusing on what bad things other people do/did and how that affects you. They try to help you label others' behavior in a way that casts blame and doesn't move us very much closer to healing.

Jonice takes a different approach and instead of focusing on 'what bad things happened" she focuses on what things didn't happen that we needed to happen, how to identify these things and how to give them to ourselves. She emphasizes that while we did experience neglect, and it's good to be aware of it, playing the blame game will get us nowhere. This book was a revelation to me. My parents didn't fit the descriptions of "narcissist" that are being slathered all over the place lately. They really did try their best and I know that for a fact. But this book breaks down how parents (often with the best intentions) fail their kids, and often due to the fact that they themselves were not taught these skills either.

Dr. Webb is a sensitive, helpful author. Watching her Youtube Channel, you will see that she does not make sensational videos to get clicks and likes. She does not feed the victim fervor but instead is really invested in helping people.

The narration is a personal preference, and it's sort of hard to be objective about it. A voice is a voice and these are all very talented people (and very patient and hard-working, since recording an audio book is a lot more work than it seems). I found the performer's tone to be a little less desirable than Jonice's and was glad that Dr. Webb read the sequel, which is also great.

Don't hesitate to get this book. Even if you are not the child of emotionally immature parents, these people are literally everywhere; the workplace, your organizations, the grocery store, EVERYWHERE. It really opened my eyes and gave me more patience when dealing with people instead of jumping to conclusions.

Joanna Cannon develops complex, wonderfully human characters unlike anyone I've ever read. Her stories are richly woven and delightfully layered. You THINK you know what is going to happen.. but then she sneaks up on you and you won't be disappointed.

I've read a lot of self-help books over the past 20 years. This book is a gem. I had several ah-ha moments while listening. It's well structured, solidly written and there are methods and steps described to help us in daily self-healing. The author is courageous for sharing her own personal stories to illustrate points, and we benefit from that.

I've always loved your performance on Curb, but I discovered your book at a tough time in my life when I could really use some laughs and inspiration. Listening to your audiobook driving to and from work each day gave me something to look forward to and really cheered me up. Laughter is a powerful medicine, and comics do an important job in our world. Thank you for writing your book and making our days a little brighter. - Kristin in Saratoga, NY.

I've listened to three of Brene Browns books so far. Well-written, sincere, common sense and down to earth. Brene shares groundbreaking ideas about what it means to be vulnerable and why we use many of the coping mechanisms we use every day and how they don't work as well as and what we should try instead. its changing my life.
