The change of narration works in favor although I found it hard to get used to.
Author has picked up well from the depths of the previous volume and the present style works better.

Tough reading, scattered insights

Book with a lot of lessons spanning an incredible period of industrialism. The semi autobiographical format makes the volume hard to swallow but after digesting some details, there's much to be gained in terms of understanding the GM management model.

Absurd growth story

Pretty authentic Stephenson novel in all. Couple of unique ideas that are spun to the extreme. The plot is as difficult to follow as you might expect but it gives an intriguing tugs every now and then. The beginning is a challenge, but absurd feeling last throughout the book.

Twist and turns

This story has a lot of unique elements to it, creating a combo with a strong feel for it. Started reading before the threat of ww3 felt any real, later reading only increased the anxiety ever present in the book.

The volume includes numerous sidetracks which present, among the many, for me boring monologs of basic religion and philosophy treatments where as the mysticism and novelty of good (Sci) fiction are well hidden until the very last.

So although this book is an interesting journal to a hell underneath earth, I'm not sure if I am interested to follow it longer in a sequel.

Challenging, slow, strange

Didn't make me care for New York.
Based on author's earlier work, I was expecting a novel concept. Book's got that all right. But the implementation isn't that great.

The book is so packed with today subcultaral references out which I'm only well infused Lovecraftian ones that I felt missing big chunks of the fascination from early on.

The audiobook performer is really professional but for me, in the whole, over does it and only amplifies my alienation. Great work still.

Unusual space opera

Less Guns and science fiction but more inter-species cultural and biological thoughts than I've ever experienced elsewhere. However, the downside is that it feels like a set of short stories rather than a novel in consequence and is less captivating than some.

Tricky. Short, Suspending

I admit the book didn't quite meet my expectations but on the other hand, it did present nice surprises on the way. The story is not very easy to follow as an audio book as it is very non-linear and the references to people and times require a good memory of all circumstances. As far the genre is concerned, I think it is a borderline case whether this is sci-fi or just future oriented non-fiction.

All unique ideas spent in the first volume

The idea of post-apocalyptic world after EMP attack is well laid out in the first book. The following ones get boring as the story has no real hook anymore and things progress like in a Season nine of Walking dead. By 3rd volume it's down to worst parts GoT: excessive violance, murder, and mayhem. The potentially good parts of the story become too bloody
