Historia
The knight was supposed to be a man. Not me, Sophie MacKnight, a marketing associate from California. This must be a practical joke that the Scots play on visiting Americans. Because otherwise I’ve inherited a haunted castle in Scotland, along with one irritatingly sexy Scotsman, who would be delighted if I turned tail and ran. Frankly, I thought I would fly here, sell the heap of bricks, and head back home to a life that I…well, I was comfortable with at the very least. Instead, the people of Loren Brae are in trouble, and it appears that as the new owner of the castle.

Really difficult to listen to
Revisado: 02-27-25
First - I haven’t finished the entire book yet, but does anyone else feel like they’ve heard this plot before? I just finished reading the Dragon Trilogy by Nora Roberts and honestly - there are so many similarities it’s crazy: Girl is short on confidence - parental neglect/indifference - ends up with money and a chance to go to Ireland/Scotland - has a best gay guy friend that goes with her - falls for a cranky hero - realizes she either has or can develop magical skills and saves the day. The Nora Roberts’ books, however has much more depth and plot.
Second - The audio is really difficult to listen to. Using accents is fine - even if they aren’t great - but the hero and other male characters in this story are simply too much work. You have to listen really hard to make out what they are trying to say. Amy Landon is “ok” but words are drawn out and I wish she would just talk instead of trying to dramatize so much. I think I might like some of the characters - but this is a fairly simplistic story that should be entertaining - not an exercise in understanding a Scottish brogue.

Enchanting
Revisado: 02-14-25
This was a hard one to let go of and I agree with a few other reviewers that said it seemed to end too quickly. It felt like there were still stories left to be told.
This being said, it was a great listen that I thoroughly enjoyed. Maybe just a little too much fantasy for my taste - but I fell in love with the characters and the setting. The narrator did a great job - making the story even better. Maybe Nora will write a sequel some day and we can go back to Talamh and reviisit Breen, Keegan, Marcus, Marg, Sally & Derek and all the rest.

I enjoyed the story -
Revisado: 01-02-25
I liked the story! I've always thought Sharon Sala was a really good author - but the last few books that I have read have seemed really cheesy with overly dramatic characters. Maybe part of it can be attributed to the narrators? Some men simply shouldn't try to speak as women and Tyler Darby is definitely one of them.

Good Series
Revisado: 08-21-24
I am enjoying this series and will certainly continue with it. The mysteries have been interesting and suspenseful and I'm looking forward to the continued story, character and relationship development.
I'm not overly impressed with the narration - Nancy Wu isn't a bad narrator - but it feels like she lacks depth. The characters sound the same and they do not match up with the personalities the author has built in my head. Nevertheless, she's not overly dramatic (a good thing) and she doesn't try to make her voice into something it's not. Hopefully she'll get better as the series continues. I might try reading the next book instead of listening to see if it changes my perception.

Fun listen
Revisado: 07-10-24
Great book - great characters - great story. I thought the dialog was a little tedious/repetitive at times, but overall, it was a fun and entertaining listen. This is my 4th Katherine Center novel and I've enjoyed all of them but thought this one and "How to Walk Away" were definitely a step above the other two. I am amazed, however, at some of the negative comments about the narrator - Therese Plummer. Personally, I don't think there is anyone better!

A great listen - I'm a little troubled that it was so easy to get attached to the main characters - given they were con-artists and thieves - but overall, the book was thoroughly entertaining.

Why ruin a good story?
Revisado: 10-04-23
It’s one thing to “reimagine” a beloved story. However, if I would have read this before reading/listening to the original Aladdin story - I never would have read the original. The original is uplifting and fun. This is dark and depressing. I kept waiting for something good to happen. Even though it wasn’t an unhappy ending - I can’t say it was really happy either. Just . . . ‘blah”
I’ll stick to the original stories from now on - if I want to go on a downer, I’ll watch the news.

Were we supposed to like the main character?
Revisado: 09-10-23
This book wore me out. I'm sorry - but it sounded like the author wanted the main character to sound like she was a martyr for the way she suffered through childbirth and the first six to twelve months of motherhood. Really - I know it can be very tough being a single mother - but how many have the luxury of not having to go back to a full time job in six or eight weeks? How many have the luxury of having their own mother stay with them and then visit daily to help out?
I kept waiting for the main character to get a clue about motherhood and her relationship - but it just didn't happen in time to salvage the book for me.

Predictable and Simple
Revisado: 08-26-23
I've always loved Sharon Sala's stories - but this one left me flat. It was a good idea, but it was cheesy and simplistic. There was no real depth to the story or the characters and it kept going off on "side bars" that had little or zero relevance.
A big part of my disappointment might have been caused by the narration - Tim Lounibos is horrible (actually cringe worthy) at women's voices - especially those with a southern accent. Some of the men weren't much better - everyone sounded old and whiney. I would not listen to another book that he narrated.

Entertaining
Revisado: 04-23-23
It took me quite a while to warm up to the main characters - especially Hannah. It’s hard to really enjoy a book if you have difficulty liking the protagonist. While I still wasn’t crazy about her, I did find her less annoying by the end of the story. Overall, the story kept me entertained and I might try one more from this I author.
