What might be maudlin proves to be a lovely listen. Frank is my new role model.

Fascinating storyline, but the nasal accented voice used for Donaldina’s character was irritating enough that I began to dread hearing it.

Would you recommend this book to a friend? Why or why not?

I have shared it and recommended frequently. The difference between a fixed mindset, in which one believes she is incapable of learning new things or changing behaviors is crippling - severely limiting one's potential. It's also a very common problem, but Angela Duckworth helps us to see that isn't set in stone. We can learn new behaviors and change. She makes solving that immense problem approachable.

What was one of the most memorable moments of Grit?

The early section on why WestPoint cadets fail out was fascinating, but I particularly like the later sections of helping kids discover new interests and passions.

How did the narrator detract from the book?

I enjoyed her narration as her passion is transparent and motivating, but not cloying.

Do you think Grit needs a follow-up book? Why or why not?

Yes, I'd like to learn how her research evolves.

Any additional comments?

I've listened to it 2X already. This is one I'll go back to frequently to focus on the nuances.

Coming of age in Alaska's fishing industry

What did you like best about The Alaskan Laundry? What did you like least?

Fascination with the fishing industry is what hooked me on this book.

How would you have changed the story to make it more enjoyable?

Deeper character development for the protagonist and key characters. It takes a long time to learn why she's made the choices that led her to Alaska, but even then the answers aren't very satisfying. It's enjoyable, if light.

Do you think The Alaskan Laundry needs a follow-up book? Why or why not?

Without giving a spoiler alert, I'd say the end is crafted for a sequel.

Any additional comments?

To me, this reads like a YA coming of age story - and I read a fair amount of YA material. A decent debut novel, but I wouldn't rush to buy the author's next book.

In the US we live with continuous technology disruption and often take it for granted, but where do we go from here? And what's happening in other parts of the world that we don't hear about? Alec Ross' work is studied and insightful, as well as being a good listen. If you like science and technology this is well worth your time. I've shared it with a number of friends.

The complex relationships of sisterhood are powerful influences in my life and Sarah Bird beautifully captures the many facets of those oft challenging interactions in this story of 2 pairs of sisters, linked by family, time and the tragedy of Okinawa's history. For me, it also redefines the idea of a ghost story - in the best possible transformation and delivered by a stellar cast.

As a writer, Sarah Bird has come of age with this well crafted and ambitious work. Though it starts off sounding like another YA coming of age story, Luz and Tamiko are characters worth knowing.

This is one I'll read again and again.
