Historia
Nine Chilean women from vastly different backgrounds have been brought together by their beloved therapist, Natasha, to talk about their lives and help each other heal. From a teenage computer whiz confronting her sexual identity, to a middle-aged recluse who prefers the company of her dog over that of most humans, the women don’t have much in common on the surface. And yet as they tell their stories, unlikely common threads are discovered, bonds are formed, and lives are transformed.

Beautifully written and performed. Wonderful!
Revisado: 05-07-18
A book without violence that holds your attention is a rarity. This book is indeed that, a lone flower in a bed of weeds. As a survivor of the Cold War, this historical fiction held a very real note of the absurd tragedy of the USSR, but from a deeply personal view point. A Gentleman in Moscow, who turns out to be much more than you could ever imagine, is a great book.

Historia
John Hart creates a literary thriller that is as suspenseful as it is poignant, a riveting murder mystery layered beneath the southern drawl of a humble North Carolina lawyer. When Work Pickens finds his father murdered, the investigation pushes a repressed family history to the surface and he sees his own carefully constructed facade begin to crack.

Unexpectedly Good
Revisado: 09-24-16
this was a real mystery, everyone was suspect until the last half hour. I did not figure it out, which was a delightful surprise. I hate predictable books. This book was not full of bloody details...people were killed with finesse. The characters were well rounded and fully developed. All in all, an interesting "read".6

The irascible A. J. Fikry, owner of Island Books - the only bookstore on Alice Island - has already lost his wife. Now his most prized possession, a rare book, has been stolen from right under his nose in the most embarrassing of circumstances. The store itself, it seems, will be next to go. One night upon closing, he discovers a toddler in his children’s section with a note from her mother pinned to her Elmo doll: I want Maya to grow up in a place with books and among people who care about such kinds of things. I love her very much, but I can no longer take care of her.

Bless be the book that binds
Revisado: 07-25-16
Interesting how passionate book readers attract each other. This story is about a little town on an island, a bookstore and a bookseller. What binds it all together is the love of books that wraps around the hearts of them all, adding joy and complications along the way. If you love books too this is for you

The two principal stories at play in Wintering are bound together when the elderly, demented Harry Eide escapes his sickbed and vanishes into the forbidding, northernmost wilderness that surrounds the town of Gunflint, Minnesota - instantly changing the Eide family, and many other lives, forever. He'd done this once before, more than 30 years earlier in 1963, fleeing a crumbling marriage and bringing along Gustav, his 18-year-old son.

Interesting book, if you've never experienced brutal winter in the wild this will be unbelievable
Revisado: 07-07-16
Perhaps I loved this book because I am a child of the vast white wasteland. It all seemed very authentic to me. Or perhaps I loved it because I love mysteries, but I am so tired of blood and gore. Or maybe because I'm a fool for a September love story. I hope you find lots of reasons to love it too.

Historia
Cleary, North Carolina, is a sleepy mountain town, the kind of place where criminal activity is usually limited to parking violations. Not so, lately. Four women have disappeared from Cleary over the past two years. And there's always a blue ribbon left near the spot where each of the women was last seen. There are no bodies, no other clues, and no suspicion as to who their abductor might be. And now, another woman has disappeared without a trace.

But I just could not figure out who did it. I love Sanford and his cohorts, but it's a gender thing. The male mystery writers have the nuts and bolts down pat, but Brown has the heart down pat. Very engaging story

An historic look at what made modern women tough
Revisado: 11-03-15
Our foremothers did not just follow their husbands blindly, many risked life, imprisonment, abuse and social rejection to move the lot of women forward. This book is about the roots of birth control and abortion. It used to be illegal to practice any form of birth control, any doctor found guilty of guiding women to limit their families would find themselves in jail. We've come a long way, baby.
Other than fascinating history, the story is interesting with wonderful characters, both major and minor. The story hands us a complete slice of history for this time period, all the good, bad and awful. Wonderful story.
