Historia
When Rin aced the Keju - the Empire-wide test to find the most talented youth to learn at the Academies - it was a shock to everyone: to the test officials, who couldn’t believe a war orphan from Rooster Province could pass without cheating; to Rin’s guardians, who believed they’d finally be able to marry her off and further their criminal enterprise; and to Rin herself, who realized she was finally free of the servitude and despair that had made up her daily existence. That she got into Sinegard - the most elite military school in Nikan - was even more surprising.

I can’t get enough
Revisado: 03-04-25
I love war books and I’m new to fantasy. This is a wonderful combination of the two. You get the complexities of war, the misinterpretations, the messiness, and the multiple truths. Amazingly, the fantasy does not make light of these things but has made me think deeper and rethink more than any war books I’ve read before.

Historia
Harlem, 1926. Young Black women like Louise Lloyd are ending up dead. Following a harrowing kidnapping ordeal when she was in her teens, Louise is doing everything she can to maintain a normal life. She’s succeeding, too. She spends her days working at Maggie’s Café and her nights at the Zodiac, Harlem’s hottest speakeasy. Louise’s friends, especially her girlfriend, Rosa Maria Moreno, might say she’s running from her past and the notoriety that still stalks her, but don’t tell her that.

Unfortunately, this book was a significant disappointment. While I pushed through to the end for the sake of my book club, even the person who chose it admitted to struggling. Despite an intriguing premise, the story is riddled with glaring plot holes, questionable character choices, and a lack of depth.
One of the most unbelievable moments involves the protagonist, the female lead (FL), punching a police officer, being arrested, and then being offered a deal to assist in a case in exchange for a clean record. Given the historical setting and the racial dynamics of the time, this scenario feels implausible to the point of breaking immersion.
Beyond that, while the story is set against the backdrop of a serial killer targeting Black women and the FL’s own history of being kidnapped, she inexplicably spends her nights drinking and dancing until dawn, seemingly unconcerned about the dangers around her.
There’s also no character growth to anchor the story. The FL repeatedly makes reckless decisions—wandering alone at night and drinking to excess—that feel contrived to drive the plot rather than stemming from any genuine development. Even the detective in the book remarks, “You can’t be that stupid,” and unfortunately, this sentiment resonates. While the narrative describes the FL as clever, her actions suggest otherwise; she fails to connect even the most obvious dots or recognize retaliation when it’s right in front of her.
Lastly, while the author critiques others for romanticizing the 1920s, the book itself falls into this trap, presenting a shallow and somewhat sanitized depiction of the era. The lack of research is glaring, and the story reads like a rushed first draft. If an editor was involved, it seems their guidance was ignored—an issue that parallels the frustrating flaws of the protagonist herself.
In short, this book feels underdeveloped and poorly executed, failing to deliver on its potential.

Read this for book club and was pleasantly surprised. I usually can figure out the plot but I couldn’t this time.

They are both wonderful
Revisado: 01-21-21
I first saw the movie on Netflix, and though it is a little different, it does a great job of telling the story.
This is my second time listening to the book. This love story is beyond a love story. This book is amazingly excellent, and I am grateful for the translation.
Please, everyone and anyone, listen to this beautiful narration.
