I love a Jennifer Nielsen book. She never disappoints. This was another great story, definitely a page turner, had me wondering what was going to happen. I loved all of the detail that allowed me to really visualize the adventure. Now I’m off to watch some documentaries about Everest!

Historia
Early in the Great War, men left Britain’s factories in droves to enlist. Struggling to keep up production, arsenals hired women to build the weapons the military urgently needed. “Be the Girl Behind the Man Behind the Gun,” the recruitment posters beckoned. Thousands of women—cooks, maids, shopgirls, and housewives—answered their nation’s call. These “munitionettes” worked grueling shifts often seven days a week, handling TNT and other explosives with little protective gear.

It was sometimes hard to keep track of the different story lines and girls, but I really enjoyed listening to this story. The narrator is my absolute favorite to listen to.

Historia
Mary Mallon was a courageous, headstrong Irish immigrant woman who bravely came to America alone, fought hard to climb up from the lowest rung of the domestic service ladder, and discovered in herself an uncanny, and coveted, talent for cooking. Working in the kitchens of the upper class, she left a trail of disease in her wake, until one enterprising and ruthless "medical engineer" proposed the inconceivable notion of the "asymptomatic carrier" - and from then on Mary Mallon was a hunted woman.

Crazy story
Revisado: 04-19-24
I didn’t know anything about this person. I feel bad for her! It was a hard life for her enough as it is. I did not like the parts that went on the boyfriend’s viewpoint. It was not necessary. Just make the book shorter and leave out the dumb boyfriend.

Unexpected twists and turns

I was kind of confused by the two completely different stories at first, but then I loved how they intertwined. So many great twists and turns in this book. It kept me thinking for each side, wondering who was right, and what was going to happen.

Story of a hormonal teenager with some WWII history
Revisado: 04-21-23
I’ve read a lot of historical fiction. I love the genre. But this book was not one of my favorites. It was full of crass and vulgar language, more than I have read in any other historical fiction book I have ever read. This poor use of language didn’t add any value to the story; it just detracted from it. Why include all of the demoralizing of women and talking about them as mere objects to be used by men throughout the book? Looking at porn, the constant talk of sex- this book was supposed to have humor, but I failed to find the humor in most of what was supposed to be “funny.” I guess you have to lower your standard of humor down to that of a hormonal teenager, and then you’ll be good to go. I was very disappointed in this book.
