Historia
Do you believe in love at first sight? Paul Auster doesn't. Paul doesn't believe in much at all. He's thirty, slightly overweight, and his best features are his acerbic wit and the color commentary he provides as life passes him by. His closest friends are a two-legged dog named Wheels and a quasibipolar drag queen named Helena Handbasket. He works a dead-end job in a soul-sucking cubicle, and if his grandmother's homophobic parrot insults him one more time, Paul is going to wring its stupid neck.

truly a delight!

Aw man, this was amazing. Emotional, hilarious, sweet story. I laughed (more like "cackled like a loon at my desk at work"), I cried, I suffered intense second-hand embarassment. I fell in love with the characters and I cannot WAIT for the sequel with Sandy/Helena and Darren.
The narration was PERFECT. Michael is a gift.

Historia
Rosalinda Fitzroy has been asleep for 62 years when she is woken by a kiss. Locked away in the chemically induced slumber of a stasis tube in a forgotten subbasement, 16-year-old Rose slept straight through the Dark Times that killed millions and utterly changed the world she knew. Now her parents and her first love are long dead, and Rose - hailed upon her awakening as the long-lost heir to an interplanetary empire - is thrust alone into a future in which she is viewed as either a freak or a threat. Rose must face the ghosts of her past with open eyes....

Better than expected.
Revisado: 11-10-12
Would you recommend this audiobook to a friend? If so, why?
Yes - it held my interest all the way through and kept me entertained. I genuinely wanted to find out what happened.
Have you listened to any of Angela Dawe’s other performances before? How does this one compare?
I had not, but would be happy with it in future if she happened to be narrating another book I wanted to "read".
Any additional comments?
I really liked this more than I'd expected to... mainly because every time something made me want to roll me eyes and think, "typical YA fiction, blerg" the author redeemed it. No, this is not great literature or serious sci fi or even the most shining example our world building and characterization... BUT. I liked the characters. I cared about them. Rose was very very passive at first but there turns out to be any number of good reasons for it - plus, her character arc is about her developing a sense of agency. I loved the arc of her relationship with Xavier, and her relationships with Bren and Otto.
The world building needed polish but it was functional and the romance was not overdone and not the focus of the plot. I enjoyed watching it play out in flashes through Rose's recollections and the realization of what had been done to her.
And finally, I like that the book had a proper ENDING even though it was kept open enough for a possible sequel.

Historia
When Cora and her little sister, Mimi, are sent to stay with their great-aunt in the isolated village of Bryers Guerdon, they receive a less than warm welcome and are desperate to go back to London. But Auntie Ida’s life was devastated the last time two young girls were at Guerdon Hall, and now her nieces’ arrival has reawakened an evil that has lain in wait for years. A haunting voice in an empty room; a strange, scarred man lurking in the graveyard; mysterious words scrawled on the walls of the abandoned church ... all point to a horrifying truth that has held Bryers Guerdon in its grip for centuries.

would make a fantastic movie
Revisado: 08-23-12
What does Anne Flosnik bring to the story that you wouldn???t experience if you just read the book?
I thought she differentiated between the characters well with slight changes in tone and accent, so even if I missed the name at a perspective switch due to inattention, I always knew who was speaking. And she also dramatized it well, ratcheting up the tension so I really empathized with the kids' fear without feeling it was over dramatic.
Did you have an extreme reaction to this book? Did it make you laugh or cry?
I spent at least the last hour and fortyfive minutes of the book all but wringing my hands with terror and suspense. Whew!
Any additional comments?
Well-crafted story, if a bit of a slow starter. Very atmospheric, the characters felt real, and I think the mystery and suspense were well-paced. The slow build of the fear and the reveal of what was happening were satisfying and I thought it paid off at the end.

I first "read" this book by listening to this audiobook. It is a wonderful story (as I expected from Neil) and as he's reading his own work & I love his voice anyway, the narration is perfect. I actually liked this story so much I ended up also buying a print version.

Historia
Okay, so jogging through Central Park after midnight wasn't a bright idea. But Margrit Knight never thought she'd encounter a dark new world filled with magical beings, not to mention a dying woman and a mysterious stranger with blood on his hands. Her logical, lawyer instincts told her it couldn't all be real, but she could hardly deny what she'd seen...and touched.

unable to finish
Revisado: 03-25-11
I have not yet been able to get to the end of this audiobook - I have been thinking that I might try and pick up the printed version so I can find out how it ends at least. There's nothing especially original about the plot or particularly special about the writing, though both are decent and like I said, I would like to find out what happens. I like Margrit a lot; she's kind of a bamf, but strong without the annoyingly overbearing qualities Anita has taken on in the later Anita Blake books.
The problem is that I just cannot stand the narrator. What bothers me may not drive other people as crazy, but she's constantly throwing me out of the story. If you can't fake an accent, please don't try; it makes me cringe to listen to you. Even that I could have probably slogged through, but I came to feel that if I had to listen to her drawl "Maaaaarrrrrgriiiit" in that overwrought breathy tone one more time, I was going to chuck my Zen out the nearest window.
