Historia
Franz von Heiden, son of a Nazi official and an English mother, comes to England early in 1938 to visit his English cousins - and study them. He is both accepted and entertained by Wynne Braithwaite's family and friends. But the peace and abundance which he finds about him are not what he had expected. These people are not the decadent enemy; their casual talk and happy lives betray no weakness. Franz is disturbed - his reports to his father at home are not what had been expected there. Finding himself in love with Wynne, he is troubled at the thought of his mother's broken life in Germany.

An Austrian finds out England is a good place.
Revisado: 09-19-23
The first time I read this book I was a bit confused, but with this performance I saw more clearly the way the Austrian changed from his view of Englishmen as soft and undisciplined to free and determined.

Historia
Elfrida Jane, accustomed to the energetic life of a small-part actress, finds life at Mountain Cross very different. At first her mother's old cliff-top house seems lonely and bleak, compared to the glitter and bustle of the theatre. But Elfrida has plenty of courage and soon settles down to enjoy herself. Then, suddenly, her peace is shattered. To the house on the cliff come unexpected visitors from the world of the theatre - a world Elfrida thought she had left behind forever.

Great Story; Very Badly Voiced; Lackluster Intetpr
Revisado: 07-03-23
This is the story that got me started on audiobooks. I couldn't find it, so I recorded it for myself. I like my performance much more than this one. The reader gives the hero a squeaky, high tenor voice, even higher than she gives the 8-yr-old boy. She has the hero showing lots of excitement over minor things, but when the heroine is truly angry, she makes her sound bored. The villain, who is supposed to be a theater heart-throb, has a voice that could only be cast as an ineffectual minor character. In short, I doubt I'll ever want to listen to this performance again.

Great Story, So-So Performance
Revisado: 07-03-22
One of my favorite D. E. Stevenson stories, Anna and Her Daughters explores some of the problems of sibling rivalry - particularly when one sibling is brilliant. Candida Gubbins' performance is okay, except for her rendering of the hero's voice, which the author describes as a deep voice, but which the narrator has higher than her normal speaking voice and with the cracked quality of a nervous adolescent. Other than that, I enjoyed the reading.

Historia
During the depths of the Great Depression, Seabiscuit won against incredible odds and uplifted the hearts of Americans from the streets to the White House. Ralph Moody recounts the thrilling tale of the plucky horse who refused to quit, the down-on-his-luck jockey who didn't let horrendous accidents keep him out of the saddle, and the taciturn trainer who brought out the best in both.

Great Story, Very Good Performance
Revisado: 06-27-22
I've loved this book for years, and Jim Weiss does it justice. I was a bit reluctant to listen, since I was afraid a lackluster would tick me off; but this reader was exciting to listen to. The only possible gripe I had was his pronunciation of one word, but then I'm very picky. Mr. Weiss, unlike most readers of horse stories, gives me the impression that he actually knows what he's reading about and finds it as thrilling as I do!

Historia
George Eliot's first full-length novel is the moving, realistic portrait of three people troubled by unwise love. Adam Bede is a hardy young carpenter who cares for his aging mother. His one weakness is the woman he loves blindly: the trifling town beauty, Hetty Sorrel, who delights only in her baubles - and the delusion that the careless Captain Donnithorne may ask for her hand.

Willy Wonka's famous chocolate factory is opening at last! But only five lucky children will be allowed inside. And the winners are: Augustus Gloop, an enormously fat boy whose hobby is eating; Veruca Salt, a spoiled-rotten brat whose parents are wrapped around her little finger; Violet Beauregarde, a dim-witted gum-chewer with the fastest jaws around; Mike Teavee, a toy pistol-toting gangster-in-training who is obsessed with television; and Charlie Bucket, our hero, a boy who is honest and kind, brave and true, and good and ready for the wildest time of his life!

Historia
Originally published in 1916, Dorothy Canfield Fisher was a women's rights activist, educator, wife and mother. Many of her stories contain autobiographical elements, including Understood Betsy, the story of the orphan Elizabeth Ann who lives with Great Aunt Harriet and Aunt Francis. Although kind, the aunts worry and fuss about little things all the time. At the age of 9, when her aunts can no longer care for her, Elizabeth Ann must leave to go and live with distant relatives on a farm in Vermont.

Great Story
Revisado: 04-13-21
I've always loved this book, but I wish the narrator knew how to pronounce words like "hearth" and "copse." Her voice and interpretation are very good, but her mispronunciations annoy me so much I don't want to hear her again.

Historia
Jane Austen's most popular novel, originally published in 1813, some 17 years after it was first written, presents the Bennet family of Longbourn. Against the background of gossipy Mrs. Bennet and the detached Mr. Bennet, the quest is on for husbands for the five daughters. The spotlight falls on Elizabeth, second eldest, who is courted by Darcy, though initially she is more concerned with the fate of her other sisters.

Finally a good narration
Revisado: 10-26-20
I have always loved Pride and Prejudice, but every time I got it on audiobook, I was disappointed in the narration. Often I felt like the performer didn't really understand what he was reading. But Emilia Fox, even though her voice doesn't have the range to differentiate much among the men's voices, puts the story across very well. Three cheers!

Fun Story
Revisado: 05-27-20
Hilarious mishaps of a naive, but "loving and giving" girl. Kitten is great friends with her husband and his buddies, which makes for problems with societal norms. The narrator, unfortunately, doesn't have the low voice needed to play the parts of so many men, but she does a very good job with the voice she has.
