fascinating and frightening American catastrophe
Revisado: 02-06-22
This is a thoroughly researched history of the Sackler family over the past 100 years which reveals the foundation for the horror that became of Oxycontin and the central role the family and the drug played in the opioid epidemic. Engaging and easy to read/listen. Keefe is a surprisingly superior narrator.

Historia
Why is it that so many efforts by liberals to lift the Black underclass not only fail, but often harm the intended beneficiaries? In Please Stop Helping Us, Jason L. Riley examines how well-intentioned welfare programs are in fact holding Black Americans back. Minimum-wage laws may lift earnings for people who are already employed, but they price a disproportionate number of Blacks out of the labor force. Affirmative action in higher education is intended to address past discrimination, but the result is fewer Black college graduates than would otherwise exist.

Excellent. Well organized and data based arguments

Great read. Somewhat of a Sowell and Steele disciple but interesting story of his own and a very fact/data based argument.

Compelling first half, goes too far in second half
Revisado: 07-22-20
Compelling first half, goes too far in second half. would have preferred a different narrator as he is not reading the book so much as presenting a speech. Which is fine in that setting but listening to a book for hours like this is difficult. Constant changes in tone and volume actually create confusion at times.

Why Honor Matters

Historia
To the modern mind, the idea of honor is outdated, sexist, and barbaric. It evokes Hamilton and Burr and pistols at dawn, not visions of a well-organized society. But for philosopher Tamler Sommers, a sense of honor is essential to living moral lives. In Why Honor Matters, Sommers argues that our collective rejection of honor has come at great cost. Reliant only on Enlightenment liberalism, the United States has become the home of the cowardly, the shameless, the selfish, and the alienated. Properly channeled, honor encourages virtues like courage, integrity, and solidarity.

fascinating portrayal of our society astray
Revisado: 03-15-20
Dr. Sommers narrates his well researched book on honor. He gives both extensive background and examples of how honor can and should return as a foundation of our society. One feels at times back in college and listening to your favorite lecturer, enthralled by every word. But his book goes so much further than the campus coffee shop. I only wish I had the chance to discuss the many thought provoking topics with the author himself.

real life Borat
Revisado: 01-15-20
Tuvia Tenenbom's words are carefully chosen and he has a superb skill of saying much more about his subject in what he doesn't put down on paper than what he conveys directly. This is not a monologue about his own worldview or opinions. He is an honest journalist who reports what he sees and hears with as much integrity as we could possibly hope for in this world. It's the message that is chilling. That antisemitism and Jew hatred, often for reasons not understood by the bigot, is rampant in the more unexpected and insidious places in our society. This and all his books are important documents that should be read and re-read by all Jews and non-Jews alike.

Historia
Zero is just one of 20,000 people aboard a spaceship bound for a new planet set to be colonized. The journey is over a century long but luckily, everyone is in stasis, so they’ll be safe and sound asleep during the trip. Everyone that is, except for Zero, whose pod has malfunctioned, waking him up a hundred years early. His initial excitement in roaming the ship alone quickly turns to a heart-stopping interstellar adventure when a family of space pirates show up, trying to hijack the ship and take the colonizers hostage.

interesting history of an iconic band
Revisado: 12-21-18
enjoyed the story a lot. would have preferred to have Adam and Michael read the entire book. while it sounded cool to have all these other famous people read chapters it was a bit confusing since much of the book is written in the first person. The variability bordered on annoying especially when one accent was so strong I stopped listening as it was incoherent. wish I had the book to accompany this with pictures and the lists of all great musical influences.

In 2011, a 26-year-old libertarian programmer named Ross Ulbricht launched the ultimate free market: the Silk Road, a clandestine website hosted on the Dark Web where anyone could trade anything - drugs, hacking software, forged passports, counterfeit cash, poisons - free of the government's watchful eye. It wasn't long before the media got wind of the new website where anyone - not just teenagers and weed dealers but terrorists and black hat hackers - could buy and sell contraband detection-free.
