This book is pitched to a television audience and was simpler than I had expected. It was a very thorough description of where and how humans came to exist. It is always an interesting subject and Alice Roberts is an excellent reader.

Historia
In How the World Made the West, Josephine Quinn poses perhaps the most significant challenge ever to the “civilizational thinking” regarding the origins of Western culture—that is, the idea that civilizations arose separately and distinctly from one another. Rather, she locates the roots of the modern West in everything from the law codes of Babylon, Assyrian irrigation, and the Phoenician art of sail to Indian literature, Arabic scholarship, and the metalworking riders of the Steppe, to name just a few examples.

Interesting World History Stressing how Connected Europe, Asia, and Africa have Always Been
Revisado: 03-11-25
Since I know very little Ancient history, the fact that Quinn has written this book to debunk the Western view that European civilization developed in isolation doesn’t really interest me. The rest of the book, where she is talking about how knowledge spread from Africa and Asia to Europe is well told and engrossing.

Historia
This magnificent biography of Henry VIII is set against the cultural, social and political background of his court - the most spectacular court ever seen in England - and the splendour of his many sumptuous palaces. An entertaining narrative packed with colourful description and a wealth of anecdotal evidence, but also a comprehensive analytical study of the development of both monarch and court during a crucial period in English history.

Very Detailed and Somewhat Strange Description of HenryVIII’s Court
Revisado: 02-19-25
Did you know Anne Boleyn was pregnant when Henry VIII cut off her head? Neither did I and Alison Weir might be the only person who believes that. This book gives a vivid description of all the royal trappings of Henry’s life style, how many people surrounded him. Which ones he appreciated and all the ones he killed. I am not sure how trustworthy the information is but if you ever want to see portraits of the players in this soap opera, Weir tells you where they are.

Historia
The Tudor period conjures up images of queens and noblewomen in elaborate court dress, of palace intrigue and dramatic politics. But if you were a woman, it was also a time when death during childbirth was rife, when marriage was usually a legal contract, not a matter for love, and the education you could hope to receive was minimal at best. Yet the Tudor century was also dominated by powerful and dynamic women in a way that no era had been before.

I sped up the recording because the narrator made the book sound ponderous. Once I had done that, I thoroughly enjoyed the book. It presented a very well rounded story of life for women in Tudor England from royalty to the indigent.

Interesting but Slow
Revisado: 09-18-24
The narrator was annoying and had this habit of reading every quote in a breathy whisper. I finally listened at faster than normal speed and found that better. The book does effectively take you back to a time when people actually believed Bishop Usher. Scientists who were mostly dilettantes had a terrible time reconciling their discoveries with what everyone knew was true. As the science became harder to deny people had to rearrange their world view. It does make an interesting story.

Historia
As an unmarried heretic with no heir, Elizabeth I was regarded with horror by Catholic Europe, while her Stuart successors, James I and Charles I, were seen as impecunious and incompetent. The traumatic civil wars, regicide and a republican Commonwealth were followed by the floundering foreign-leaning rule of Charles II and his brother, James II, before William of Orange invaded England with a Dutch army and a new order was imposed.

Different Slant on the English Civil War
Revisado: 03-28-24
A very dull, slow reader didn’t help a very slow moving depiction of foreigners take on the chaos that was Stuart England . The book took an interesting slant on an oft told story but was told in a very slow pace. I finally listened at 1.5 to get through it.

Historia
The grandfather of Queen Elizabeth II, King George V reigned over the British Empire from 1910 to 1936, a period of unprecedented international turbulence. Yet no one could deny that as a young man, George seemed uninspired. As his biographer Harold Nicolson famously put it, "he did nothing at all but kill animals and stick in stamps.” The contrast between him and his flamboyant, hedonistic, playboy father Edward VII could hardly have been greater.

Revisado: 01-09-24
I knew women served in noncombatant roles in World War II but I did not know the extent of their contributions. Of course, I could have guessed the sexism and racism they had to endure but it was very good to hear how they triumphed.

From 1915 to 1970, this exodus of almost six million people changed the face of America. Wilkerson compares this epic migration to the migrations of other peoples in history. She interviewed more than a thousand people, and gained access to new data and official records, to write this definitive and vividly dramatic account of how these American journeys unfolded, altering our cities, our country, and ourselves.

Fascinating, depressing, detailed story of the Great Migration of southern blacks to freedom in n the north. Taking three individuals who moved to New York, Chicago and Los Angeles to illustrate and give personality to the story, the author details the shocking world of the Jim Crow south, the terrible bigotry of the north, and the amazing strength of the black migrants.

Historia
More than 200 million years ago, geological forces split apart the continents. Isolated from each other, the two halves of the world developed radically different suites of plants and animals. When Christopher Columbus set foot in the Americas, he ended that separation at a stroke. Driven by the economic goal of establishing trade with China, he accidentally set off an ecological convulsion as European vessels carried thousands of species to new homes across the oceans.

Not as Good But Interesting
Revisado: 07-20-23
Not as good as 1491, this is a very eclectic book. The author does a deep dive on all sorts of atrocities of colonialism. It is story of greed as the great motivator of humanity. The parts I was most fascinated by were the enormous number of slave escapes, revolts and independent, successful Maroon communities. Where did that first Maroon group on the Central American isthmus come from? If you have time to meander through this book, it will leave you with lots to think about.
