Fun mystery
Revisado: 10-22-24
This is a light-hearted mystery featuring a wine, food and theatre blogger who stumbles on a pair of young wine thieves and makes her blog more popular by documenting their escapades.
She inadvertently gets drawn into mystery around a historical bottle of wine that came back from Egypt engraved with mysterious patterns. A series of murders of the team creating a historical exhibition about Nefertiti occurs, are these connected to the bottle? Francine investigates and nearly becomes another victim.
The writing is well done and the characters are well described, the pacing is also very good. I liked the narration although I thought that occasionally the wrong voice was used for the character. Overall an enjoyable listen.

Historia
Charlie Ridgway is a former US Army officer turned resort bartender on the Hawaiian island of Maui. Ridgway is bored by the seeming lack of intellectual and creative pursuits in the dream vacation community. One night at the bar, he and fellow bartender Bill Hersey meet Clarissa Daniels. As Ridgway flirts with the former B-movie actress, a young thief attempts to rob the bar's cash register. Ridgway chases him across the resort and fights him, holding his own because of his army training, but the hoodlum is similarly skilled and escapes.

Enjoyable tale set on Maui
Revisado: 01-30-24
An interesting story, I am not quite sure what category I would put it into, but it was quite interesting. However for me it was rather spoiled by the narration, Mr Robinson read virtually the whole book as though he was commentating on a sporting event. There was very little emotion portrayed by the narration, I felt that another narrator would have elevated this book to a much higher level and made it more engrossing.

Genuinely spooky
Revisado: 01-21-24
I don't normally go for ghost stories, I don't believe in ghosts and find that the few ghost storis that I do go for are usually quite disappointing. This book was different in that it blended a ghost story with a thriller, particularly towards the end.
I found the plot to be enjoyable and the characters to be well written, it was also quite exciting, especially the last hour.
The narration was well performed, although the Scottish au-pair's accent did rather come and go which was a bit distracting.
Overall, this was a mor enjoyable read than I was expecting, and just goes to show that it can pay off to listen or read books in genres you aren't normally interested in.

A bit disappointing
Revisado: 11-30-23
The premise of this story is quite interesting, A wealthy lady, Agnes, in a relationship with a senior detective in the police in the Tyneside area. A dead body in the ladies room in of a restaurant is the catalyst for everything that follows, again interesting and quite promising.
Unfortunately the whole story was spoiled by the way that Agnes withheld important information from the police, namely her partner Alan. No normal upright citizen would keep things from the police, and especially someone who lives with a senior police officer, it is an offence that she could be jailed for.
There were other silly mistakes, for example it refers to 'detectives' being sent to the crime scene, the correct term is that police officers were sent.
On the other hand I thought that the characters were well written and interesting, and the way that the area around the river Tyne was described was well done.
I realise that this is a light mystery, but there has to be some degree of realism, and I just couldn't believe in this story, which is a shame because some parts of it are very good. I also felt that it could do with some editing, I think that it was at least 30 minutes too long and some parts could be pared back to make it more focussed.
