Historia
Part memoir, part history, Burn Book is a necessary chronicle of tech’s most powerful players. This is the inside story we’ve all been waiting for about modern Silicon Valley and the biggest boom in wealth creation in the history of the world. When tech titans crowed that they would “move fast and break things,” Kara Swisher was moving faster and breaking news. While covering the explosion of the digital sector in the early 1990s, she developed a long track record of digging up and reporting the facts about this new world order.

A fun ride through the sharpest writer in tech
Revisado: 03-30-24
This is a great listen for anyone who follows and works on tech. Kara gives a great narration that balances between her patented cynicism and humanity that makes her so great. While I’d like a more expansive story that goes beyond the big names that you’d expect, she shines light on the personalities that shape our world.

Historia
Over the last decade, a single innovation has massively fueled digital black markets: cryptocurrency. Crime lords inhabiting lawless corners of the internet have operated more freely—whether in drug dealing, money laundering, or human trafficking—than their analog counterparts could have ever dreamed of. By transacting not in dollars or pounds but in currencies with anonymous ledgers, overseen by no government, beholden to no bankers, these black marketeers have sought to rob law enforcement of their chief method of cracking down on illicit finance: following the money.

Fantastic storytelling
Revisado: 12-25-22
Andy dives into the world of black markets and cryptocurrency investigations by walking us through some of the biggest cases of the past decade.
Without getting too much in the technical weeds, this one feels like a friend telling you a story over a beer. All with plenty of twists and turns.
If you’ve been following Andy’s work from previous books covering Cypher punks, this one will be a real treat. He pulls apart the aspirations of idealists and lays out the hard reality that the fantasy being sold by the crypto community of privacy is a crock.
Hoping for him to explore more in the future about the balance between needs for privacy and surveillance.

Now that’s a story
Revisado: 05-01-19
Fantastic research and storytelling. This is one of those stories where fact is stranger than fiction. Ratliff does incredible reporting to collect details from a cast of characters, many on the shady side, to bring us a clear picture of how one man built a criminal empire. I guess this is a story of hitting on 18, and the ensuing consequences. Great narration as well despite grinding up the Israeli names. Well worth the listen.

Historia
An examination of a world increasingly defined by disorder and a United States unable to shape the world in its image, from the president of the Council on Foreign Relations. Things fall apart; the center cannot hold. The rules, policies, and institutions that have guided the world since World War II have largely run their course. Respect for sovereignty alone cannot uphold order in an age defined by global challenges from terrorism and the spread of nuclear weapons to climate change and cyberspace. Meanwhile, great power rivalry is returning.

Historia
Recent years have seen a revival of the heated culture wars of the 1990s, but this time its battleground is the Internet. On one side the alt-right ranges from the once obscure neo-reactionary and white separatist movements, to geeky subcultures like 4chan, to more mainstream manifestations such as the Trump-supporting gay libertarian Milo Yiannopolous. On the other side, struggle sessions and virtue signaling lurk behind a therapeutic language of trigger warnings and safe spaces. The feminist side of the online culture wars has its equally geeky subcultures.

A good overview of the internet’s underbelly
Revisado: 05-23-18
Well researched and presented a lot of good information on some of the lesser known parts of internet culture that have had an impact on the shape of politics and society in the past few years. I learned some new stuff, but would have liked to go a little more in depth. I would definitely recommend for anyone who is looking to get an introduction to the movements that have burst onto the Left and Right, wrecking havoc on both sides. Great analysis by the author as well.

Historia
In this short book, Sam Harris and Maajid Nawaz invite you to join an urgently needed conversation: Is Islam a religion of peace or war? Is it amenable to reform? Why do so many Muslims seem drawn to extremism? What do words like Islamism, jihadism, and fundamentalism mean in today's world? Remarkable for the breadth and depth of its analysis, this dialogue between a famous atheist and a former radical is all the more startling for its decorum. Harris and Nawaz have produced something genuinely new: they engage one of the most polarizing issues of our time - fearlessly and fully - and actually make progress.

The United States military currently views cyberspace as the "fifth domain" of warfare - alongside land, sea, air, and space - and the Department of Defense, National Security Agency, and CIA all field teams of hackers who can - and do - launch computer virus strikes against enemy targets. In fact, as @War shows, US hackers were crucial to our victory in Iraq.

The virus now known as Stuxnet was unlike any other piece of malware built before: Rather than simply hijacking targeted computers or stealing information from them, it proved that a piece of code could escape the digital realm and wreak actual, physical destruction—in this case, on an Iranian nuclear facility.

Historia
At some point, every one of us embarks on a journey to find love. We meet people, date, get into and out of relationships, all with the hope of finding someone with whom we share a deep connection. This seems standard now, but it’s wildly different from what people did even just decades ago. Single people today have more romantic options than at any point in human history. With technology, our abilities to connect with and sort through these options are staggering. So why are so many people frustrated?

Historia
In Israel and the West, it is called the Six Day War. In the Arab world, it is known as the June War or, simply, as "the Setback". Never has a conflict so short, unforeseen, and largely unwanted by both sides so transformed the world. The Yom Kippur War, the war in Lebanon, the Camp David accords, the controversy over Jerusalem and Jewish settlements in the West Bank, the intifada, and the rise of Palestinian terror are all part of the outcome of those six days.
