Had it not been for Juliet Stevenson, I would have abandoned this book. Quite frankly, this story could have been told in 3 hours or less. Maisy’s parents are divorced and she spends 6 months a year with each parent. The parents remarry and inevitably stray once again. Maisy finds herself being looked after in either home by step parents who are cheating on their spouses with each other. In the end Maisy has to make a philosophical choice…..does she remain with the “immoral” pair that loves her, or go with the upright Mrs Wicks. Henry James places quite an extraordinary burden on Maisy’s young shoulders, and this renders the plot implausible

I am so glad I stumbled on this book. Edith Wharton’s a brilliant author who takes you on a journey into the inner workings of turn of the century wealthy New York high society. Lily Bart is a tragic ornamental character who exists on the margins of opulence, by birth she belongs to this society, but lacks the economic backing, and she is welcome as long as she is useful. Lily lives in a carefully constructed house of cards, and when the storm comes, it all comes crashing down around her. Eleanor Bron’s performance is brilliant, it’s a pity she hasn’t narrated many classics.

If you are looking for a book that tells you that most pain begins in the brain, and explains what back ache can be , this would be the book. If however, you want to learn about how you can use your mind to overcome pain, there is nothing in this book that covers it. Interestingly enough, even though he rants about meds, he does admit he uses them in severe cases. He also says that if was legal, he would recommend prescribe heroin to treat pain. His anectdote about a witchdoctor curing back pain by sending demons to a chicken and the demons kill the chicken was .....umm...well, what can i say....

I was torn between the paperback or audio version of the book. I eventually settled on audio but could not listen for more than 5 minutes. The narrator tells her own story in such a robotic and mechanical manner. She does not seem to emotionally connect with her own text. She ruined the book for me, there other options available

Bill Homewood's masterful narration is perfection itself, unfortunately, after you experience this book through Bill Homewood, you will never again enjoy the screen renditions of The Three Musketeers. It is amazing to me how Homewood uses his voice to dramatize the book, he completely captures Dumas' sense of humor

Suchet brings the bible to life without being overly dramatic. It would have been great if they treated the various books of the bible as individual books and titled them .....Genesis, Exodus etc, however, if you are an avid reader of the bible, the bookmark is your best friend. I was surprised that some people are complaining about the lack of a companion book, that problem is easy to solve....use a paper or digital copy of the bible. I highly recommend this version, Suchet obviously loves the bible, he reads it with reverence

I absolutely loved Kenneth Branagh's rendition of this book. He brings the multinational cast of character to life. I hope Branagh will tackle more classics.....outstanding performance!!!

If like me, you have struggled with wrapping your mind around the whole "Jesus is the son of God" and "Salvation" theory, then this is a very useful book. The author explores the origins of the Messiah, the historical roots of the Jesus movement, modern Christianity's misinterpretation of the ancient Jewish texts (old testament), some of the historical errors in the new testament (many found in Luke), how the early followers of Jesus struggled to understand Jesus' death and how the Hellenized jewish followers of Jesus shaped the movement's theology (the theology behind the "trinity" has its roots in the roman pantheon). He explores the historical roots of antisemitism, Hitler's holocaust was some 2000 years in the making. The break between the the Jewish followers of Jesus and the followers of Yahweh would eventually sow the seeds of Christian anti-antisemitism.In the first millennium of the Christian era, leaders in the early church hierarchy developed and solidified as doctrine ideas that: all Jews were responsible for the crucifixion of Christ; the destruction of the Temple by the Romans and the scattering of the Jewish people was punishment both for past transgressions and for continued failure to abandon their faith and accept Christianity. This book is not as cohesive and methodical as one would hope in a history book, but since the historical facts are really useful, i would urge you to exercise a bit of patience.

What does Patricia Routledge bring to the story that you wouldn’t experience if you just read the book?

No-one absolutely no-one does character voices like Patricia Routledge, her vocal range is like no other i have listened to. She brings the story to life, her voice is so animated and dramatic....she does not read....she performs. If you have hated every attempt hollywood has made to reproduce this great classic on the big screen.....Patricia Routledge's performance is as good as it gets.
