Historia
Millions of people have thrilled to the adventure of young Jim Hawkins and Long John Silver since the publication of Treasure Island in 1883. It has been dramatized countless times since its appearance. Treasure maps marked with an X, schooners, the Black Spot, tropical islands, and peglegged sailors with parrots on their shoulders: All these stereotypes of the buccaneer tale were the invention of R. L. Stevenson. But make no mistake about it...this novel is a masterpiece of plot development, character study, and sheer writing skill.

A good rendition but with some warts
Revisado: 12-02-24
Classic piece of literature. The narrator is skilled, but character differentiation isn’t great, can be a little inconsistent. I was surprised the voice for Jim’s narration sounds like a grizzled old man from the west country rather than a boy, which can make things a little confusing. The dialect made it hard for my kids to listen.
There are three or more spots where he rereads a sentence and the editor missed it, one includes him getting a drink of water.

Historia
Piranesi lives in the House. Perhaps he always has. In his notebooks, day after day, he makes a clear and careful record of its wonders: the labyrinth of halls, the thousands upon thousands of statues, the tides that thunder up staircases, the clouds that move in slow procession through the upper halls. On Tuesdays and Fridays Piranesi sees his friend, the Other. At other times he brings tributes of food to the Dead. But mostly, he is alone.

Flawless, beautiful, engrossing, and tragic

This novel astonished me. Such wisdom and thoughtfulness read perfectly by Chiwetel Ejiofor. Worth every minute.

Historia
The struggle between Rome and Carthage in the Punic Wars was arguably the greatest and most desperate conflict of antiquity. The forces involved and the casualties suffered by both sides were far greater than in any wars fought before the modern era, while the eventual outcome had far-reaching consequences for the history of the Western World, namely the ascendancy of Rome. An epic of war and battle, this is also the story of famous generals and leaders: Hannibal, Fabius Maximus, Scipio Africanus, and his grandson Scipio Aemilianus, who would finally bring down the walls of Carthage.

Great telling, if a little dry
Revisado: 09-26-20
Really enjoyed the text. Adrian Goldsworthy does an excellent job putting this history together and framing it with thought and consideration.
The reader is precise and consistent, but just a little dry for my taste, considering the book deals with a technical and information-dense subject.
