Historia
It is 1793. When Mickel Cardell, a crippled ex-soldier and former night watchman, finds a mutilated body floating in the Stockholm’s malodorous lake, he feels compelled to give the unidentifiable man a proper burial. For Cecil Winge, a brilliant lawyer turned consulting detective to the Stockholm police, a body with no arms, legs, or eyes is a formidable puzzle and one last chance to set things right before he loses his battle to consumption. Together, Winge and Cardell scour Stockholm to discover the body’s identity, encountering the sordid underbelly of the city’s elite.

souless, gratuitous, vulgar, violent. What else could I say? Do not go here if you have any sensibilities at all.

Historia
A body always tells a story - but this child’s was a blank page. Rita reached for the lantern. She trained its light on the child’s face. "Who are you?" she murmured, but the face said as little as the rest of her. It was impossible to tell whether, in life, these blunt and unfinished features had borne the imprint of prettiness, timid watchfulness, or sly mischief. If there had once been curiosity or placidity or impatience here, life had not had time to etch it into permanence. Only a very short time ago, the body and soul of this little girl had still been securely attached.

l have enjoyed reading all three of Ms. Setterfield's novels and this one was a really good listen as well due to Ms. Stevenson's excellent narration. Brava!

Historia
Daniel is desperate for a job. When someone slides a note under his door offering him the groundskeeper’s position at an old estate, it seems too good to be true. Alarm bells start ringing when he arrives at Craven Manor. The mansion’s front door hangs open, and leaves and cobwebs coat the marble foyer. It’s clear no one has lived there in a long time. But an envelope waits for him inside the doorway. It contains money and promises more.

Everything good but volume would fluctuate. I am not sure if that was the recording or the narrator whose voice was excellent otherwise for this particular work as he lended a kind of BBC old radio aspect to the narrative.
