Historia
Olivia Jones, hard-working and accomplished, has, against the odds, blazed an enviable career path in the finance world. But behind the veneer of her success, she is mourning several devastating losses and betrayals. Untethered from her life in New York City, Olivia moves to a summer home in The Hamptons. Here, Olivia finds a close-knit community of African American elites who escape New York City for the beautiful beaches of the Hamptons. Since the 1930s, very few have known about this Historically Black Beachfront Community, and the residents like it that way.

Loved the sequel, can’t wait for the next one,
Revisado: 09-14-23
At first I wasn’t sure if I’d like a storyline centered mostly on the one character (from the prior book) but I definitely enjoyed this follow up to Summer on the Bluffs. It really kept my attention and I am looking forward to the next in the series.

Love this story
Revisado: 02-24-23
I’ve read this book a few times and this was my first listen. I really love Octavia Butler and her story telling. This book was my first introduction into her writing. The story is captivating and I easily get lost in it. An awesome read. I hope this gets adapted into a movie or series. Would love to see this on screen!

Historia
The great scholar, W. E. B. Du Bois, once wrote about the problem of race in America, and what he called “Double Consciousness,” a sensitivity that every African American possesses in order to survive. Since childhood, Ailey Pearl Garfield has understood Du Bois’s words all too well. Bearing the names of two formidable Black Americans—the revered choreographer Alvin Ailey and her great grandmother Pearl, the descendant of enslaved Georgians and tenant farmers—Ailey carries Du Bois’s problem on her shoulders.

A very long tale
Revisado: 02-04-23
I enjoyed the primary story, however, with the constant jumping back and forth it became trying to continue listening. Since we don’t get the correlation between the two stories until the last act of the book, it’s hard to understand why we are deep into one story just to switch to another. Since the book is really long, it was a bit bothersome as I really enjoyed the primary story without the flash backs. In addition, some character back stories were described in too much detail and just added to the length of the book. It would have been a more enjoyable read if the story was edited down a bit more.

Historia
After decades of research, world-renowned Stanford University psychologist Carol S. Dweck discovered a simple but groundbreaking idea: the power of mindset. In this brilliant book, she describes how success in school, work, sports, the arts, and almost every area of human endeavor can be dramatically influenced by how we think about our talents and abilities. In this edition, Dweck offers new insights into her now famous and broadly embraced concept. She introduces a phenomenon she calls false growth mindset and guides people toward adopting a deeper, truer growth mindset.

Great self improvement tool
Revisado: 11-28-22
This book enlightened me on my ways of thinking and how they can either promote growth or hinder me. It also helped me to be gentle with myself when I exhibit tendencies toward a more fixed way of thinking. Highly recommend.

Margot and James are broken up—for good this time. James made sure of it when he dropped the bomb on Margot: that he doesn’t want kids, ever. Then, on the biggest morning of his life, James—an ambitious lawyer at a high-powered firm—wakes up pregnant. He realizes with dread that he is part of a recent epidemic of men suddenly and inexplicably becoming pregnant. His condition obvious to the higher-ups, James is denied the promotion he was expecting, sending him reeling.

Very slow start
Revisado: 09-05-22
I love Octavia Butler’s work. This book, however, was just too slow to get off the ground for me. Eventually (after 12-15 chapters of listening) the story started to get a little more interesting. I’m not sure I’m as motivated to read book 2.
