A Good Collection of Norse Myths and Legends
Revisado: 02-24-25
You get a set of 6 collections of nordic stories by different translators/editors that generally cover the same set of Eddas and Sagas ... so there is a significant amount of duplication that can be a little disorienting at first ... but at 20+ hours, you are not going to listen to it all in one sitting either. In addition to all of the more well known stories, you do get a lot of the lessor known ones as well, so it is still a bargain if you are at all interesting in Viking myths and legends. There is not real commentary or exposition of any of them, so it is more suitable to entertainment than academic; however, the solid narration makes it easy to listen to.

Follow author Joseph Lumpkin in his dive into Gnosticism. As a follow-up to his book "Tour of Gnosticism," where gnostic cosmology is explored in conjunction with mainstream Christendom, Lumpkin has released this jaw-dropping volume of influential Gnostic texts. Lumpkin takes it a step further by coupling the text with lessons on common themes in Gnosticism, historical context for the texts, and expert commentary exploring the differences in the largest gnostic sects.

I Expected More.
Revisado: 12-30-24
From the publisher notes, I knew a little about what should be covered:
* The history of Gnosticism
* Many Gnostic texts and teachings
* The role of gnosis (knowledge) in spirituality
* Gnostic cosmology and how it interprets the nature of reality
* Christianity's reaction to gnosticism
* The role of sex, gender and femininity in gnosticism
… and it certainly touches as each of these; however, it doesn’t really go into the detail that I was expecting from “An Advanced Lesson in Gnosticism.” Here Gnosticism was presented as a more or less monolithic heterodoxy in direct competition to the christian orthodoxy … and while it is certainly true that the accepted creeds and theology did respond to parts of the Gnostic heresy, it was primarily about the gnosticism found in the Nag Hammadi Codices with little to no background on what the likely predecessors and/or influences were (gnosticism has many forms that predate christianity by a significant amount, and there are historical reasons for why it was adapted to early christian thought that are not covered at all.) Still … what it does have was pretty solid if you strip away the conspiracy style presentation that is made even worse by the style of the narration … it frequently felt like I was listening to late night radio programs about aliens and paranormal “powers.” Even that would not have been too bad if the material were better organized to avoid the incessant repetition and extensive quotations without even basic commentary/exegesis in favor of some form of logical progression.

Another Fine Addition to my Mythology Library
Revisado: 12-06-24
If you are all interested in cultural myths outside of the typical greco/roman tradition we covered in secondary school, this is a great way to explore some of the fun and interesting parts of pacific island myths and legends ... and is a tad more in depth than watching Moana (which I have ... so that is not really a critique). There is even a little history of Hawaii thrown in ... So ... Clocking in at just over 23.5 hours, there is a lot to like here, with a narrative performance a solid match for such storytelling.

A fun summer escape
Revisado: 10-02-24
All the elements were there for a casual summer read that was entertaining, but not particularly deep. The narration made it easy to just let the story develop from a simple mystery to some more … paranormal. Not exactly believable, but still interesting and fun way to pass the time with a little treasure hunting mixed in with a few legends (rumors of the fountain of youth and monster sea creatures play a significant role here) and conspiracies (standard missing persons) that sort of magically all work out (almost predictably). That also makes it easy to come and go pretty much at will and not really miss much. As an intro to the series, it was okay … a little choppy, but a good introduction to the characters and story telling style that might be hit or miss for some folks.

Better Performance Simplistic Premise
Revisado: 09-05-24
This is the second book of the series ... and as noted with my review of the first, this just did not work for me at all; however, it is worth noting several improvements. First, the narration is much better, making much easier to distinguish which character is talk (with a few irritating quarks for the aliens, but I would rather suffer those than not have the differentiation). This story itself is less course and physically gross for me as well ... but the overall premise of a competition/game for entry into some form of an interstellar community/society is way too simplistic and unbelievable. Pacing is still slow and there is a lot of relationship drama that did nothing for me, but YMMV. Over all, while better, is not enough so for me to continue with the series.

A Disjointed Fever Dream
Revisado: 09-03-24
I am pretty sure I know what the author was going for ... something along the lines of the weird nonsensical humor from the likes of Pratchett, Gaiman, et al ... and it actually starts off okay, but then goes a bit off the rails stringing together strange encounters that don't seem related to each other at all ... so it becomes more like the corny short-stories told around a campfire in a competition to see who has the silliest take on reality. For awhile it was fun ... then it just got old.

Should not be an Audio book
Revisado: 08-31-24
The performance was fantastic. I think the story is probably good but I can say most of the time o had no clue. If I had read it as a book and could have flipped back and verified this was the guy who did this and so on, I think it would have been an OK story. With out that, there are too many story lines and similar names/people to figure out the whole back ground. I like the characters and the mystery of trying to figure it out keep me to the end but I still have absolutely No clue About the world and who is fighting who and which god supports who… which should be the coolest part. No clue. Again as a book it may be fine. I will NOT ever purchase an audio book by him again though.

A Disappointing Alien Invasion Story
Revisado: 08-28-24
This book had so much potential in a genre that I typically always enjoy, but despite the excellent premise, I was surprisingly disappointed. It starts off ok … bugs have invaded and conquered earth and somewhere out there are scrappy rebels destined to take it back. That was as good as it got. Written entirely in first person present tense, there was a significant amount of passive, descriptive voice that just dragged on and on (making it exceptionally boring for most of it). Additionally, there was way too much anthropomorphizing of the alien bugs (and frankly a lot of rather gross interactions with the palpus) that just doesn’t work with the image in my head. All of this was exacerbated by a flat narration with now distinction between characters (which was especially problematic for interactions with the bugs). In fact, this was very nearly a DNF, but I already had book two in the queue, so I gutted through it.
