Historia
It’s December 19, 1931. Hercule Poirot and Inspector Edward Catchpool are looking forward to a much-needed, restful Christmas holiday, when they are called upon to investigate the murder of a man in a Norfolk hospital ward. Cynthia Catchpool, Edward’s mother, insists that Poirot stay with her in a crumbling mansion by the coast, so that they can all be together for the festive period while he solves the case.

Good but still don’t understand rationale for one murder
Revisado: 01-15-25
I like Sophie Hannah’s versions of Poirot and I love the reader who does Poirot just like David Suchet. This story seemed more contrived than the others and I’m not sure what the motive was for the initial murder. Still interesting story especially with filling in on Claypool’s life.

Intriguing Mystery
Revisado: 11-29-24
Hannah once again capture Poirot’s character and weaves a complicated mystery for his gray cells to solve. It starts with a fascinating premise of someone who shouldn’t be sitting in a seat on a bus or she’ll be murdered and becomes quite something else. But Hannah through Poirot brings it all satisfyingly together.

Returning home from a luncheon, Hercule Poirot is met at his door by an imperious woman who introduces herself as Sylvia Rule. "How dare you? How dare you send me such a letter?" Ignoring his denials, Mrs. Rule insists she received a missive claiming he had proof she murdered a man named Barnabas Pandy and advising her to confess her crime to the police. Threatening the perplexed Poirot with a lawsuit, she leaves in a huff.

Intricate plot about a possible murder
Revisado: 11-18-24
Once again Hannah captures the characters and ingenious plot constructions of Agatha Christie’s mysteries. She hooks the reader right away with four letters supposedly authored by Hercule Poirot accusing the recipients of committing a murder, one which may not have even happened. From there, intricate past sins are unveiled. The performance is excellent— Poirot sounds like he does on tv and as he should. I have been delighted with Hannah’s reviving of Christie’s Poirot and find them as Christie like as the originals. Perhaps even more fun!

Together, they have risen to the very top of a world of seemingly endless wealth—all as a decade of excess and speculation draws to an end. But at what cost have they acquired their immense fortune? This is the mystery at the center of Bonds, a successful 1937 novel that all of New York seems to have read. Yet there are other versions of this tale of privilege and deceit.

A series of narratives that unwind into one another. I might have to listen to this again to figure out the point of it all. Not quite sure.

Historia
Retired publisher Susan Ryeland is living the good life. She is running a small hotel on a Greek island with her long-term boyfriend Andreas. It should be everything she's always wanted. But is it? She's exhausted with the responsibilities of making everything work on an island where nothing ever does, and truth be told, she's beginning to miss London. And then the Trehearnes come to stay. The strange story they tell about an unfortunate murder that took place on the same day and in the same hotel in which their daughter was married fascinates Susan and piques her editor's instincts.

Another clever mystery by Horowitz
Revisado: 09-03-24
Loved following Susan’s journey as she is thrust into another mystery within a mystery story. Once again Horowitz manages to make the fictional mystery intertwine with the mystery Susan must unfold. And once again I didn’t pick up on the intricacies until they were revealed. Wonderful performance too.

In the spring of 2020, Lara’s three daughters return to the family's orchard in Northern Michigan. While picking cherries, they beg their mother to tell them the story of Peter Duke, a famous actor with whom she shared both a stage and a romance years before at a theater company called Tom Lake. Meryl Streep Brings Characters Fully to Life
Revisado: 07-01-24
A lovely story about a woman who though at first seems to be heading to a life long acting career becomes fulfilled as an orchard farmer’s wife. Couching the story within performances of Our Town was ingenious and for this reader added much profundity. The star of the audiobook is Streep who brings much warmth and expression to the main character and her family and friends. Highly recommended!

Set in boisterous, rebellious Boston on the eve of the American Revolution, Blindspot ingeniously weaves together the fictional stories of Stewart Jameson, a Scottish portrait painter and notorious libertine, and Fanny Easton, a fallen woman from one of Boston's most powerful families who disguises herself as a boy to become Jameson's defiant and seductive apprentice. Together with an African-born doctor, they investigate the death of the famous revolutionary leader Samuel Bradstreet.

Terrific historical fiction
Revisado: 12-18-23
Loved how the authors intertwined art, women’s rights, slavery, rise of revolutionary Boston with a love story and murder mystery all in one. Having the two main characters be our narrators brought two gendered perspectives in on the story. The audio performance was superb— all the readers. One of my favorite listens of the year.

Historia
Spring, 1890. The long New York winter is over, the buds are blossoming, and romance is in the air. But not all’s right in Gilded-Age Manhattan. Genevieve, a society journalist, and her fiancé, Daniel, are working with photographer Dagmar Hansen on an investigation into the House of Refuge, a children’s workhouse, inspired by Daniel’s near incarceration when he was young. Genevieve is also working on her own piece for the Globe about the Sunflower Mission House, which burned down in a suspicious fire.

Riveting and illuminating
Revisado: 11-07-23
I was on the edge of my car seat listening to this rewarding continuation of Kate Belli’s characters. And as usual, I learned more about the struggles of women during America’s Gilded Age. I knew little of Blackwell’s Island and how women were committed there against their will. Belli ably interweaves the Comstock Act, how it undermined ordinary as well as upper class women’s lives, and the seemingly unending corruption of NYC institutions. She does all of this while investing the reader-listener in the romance of Daniel and Genevieve with delight and humor. Each one of the novels in the series becomes my new favorite and that is especially true of number four! I sure hope there will be a number five in the series so we can follow our wonderful couple abroad! Once again the audio version is well acted.
