I at first thought Lysander was going to be the type of villain that some people root for. But Pierce Brown decided it made more sense to make him completely evil, with no redeeming qualities. Hard to get over that bit. It can be frustrating to read fiction universes that go on too long, which I fear may be the case here, because we get to a point where everything goes wrong and all the hard fought victories are rendered meaningless by stretched out plot. Case and point- Cassius’ entire story. Tried so hard, got so far, but in the end it didn’t even matter

My personal opinion on the character arcs of Lysander and Sefi are the reasons this book got a 4 instead of a 5. Sefi felt out of character the entire book to me which really rubbed me the wrong way during Ephraims chapters. Lysander was the worst though. I truly do not understand his character, it’s as if the time with Cassius never happened. His motivations are so confusing, one moment he sees the low colors as human just to justify their enslavement in the next chapter.

10/10 does not capture the full picture of this book, so I will go with 100/100. Not even one point off. From beginning to end, the story drives us forward with the knowledge and history of the first two, but stands on its own all the same. This trilogy is all the good things about fantasy/sci-fi with an originality that stays fresh the entire time. There is so much personality in this book, mind-bending complexity, and thoughtful storytelling. The last few chapters ruined my sleep. Let it take a shot at yours. Highly recommended to fans of fantasy and science fiction.

Two books in one?

When finishing the last few chapters of this book, it’s hard to remember where it even started. This felt like it should have been two individual books. That aside, it is an amazing read/listen and will keep you hooked the whole way through. So many twists.

gripping yet limiting itself at the same time

After the events of "The Rising Storm," this book was really set up to be grand. like light of the Jedi type grand. instead, the story is a bit isolated and feels very compact. nonetheless, Gray takes those limits and creates a really gripping story that only leaves me wanting more. highly recommend!

best star wars book I have ever read (and I used to read the EU books). you won't be disappointed with this one. amazing storytelling, had me more excited than I was to see the Sequel Trilogy in theaters!

The negative reviewers are... confused.

First off, this is the SECOND book in the High Republic series. If you haven't read "Light of the Jedi", then go read that first!!! Although Test of Courage is a contained storyline, it will make more sense after you read the first one. Once you have read the Light of the Jedi, here is my review for Test of Courage:

This novel is definitely a "coming of age" book. That might turn some of you away, but I for one enjoyed the exciting story following new Jedi. The Knight, Vern, is one of my new favorite Jedi. She is capable, yet far from perfect. The story surrounds a group on youngsters in a survival situation, and it is entertaining the entire way through. It is also short, so if you are worried you won't like it, that's okay. It is a quick listen/read. I saw a few negative reviews mention "SJW BS", and I honestly have no idea what they are talking about. Aside from two of the four teens being women, and both being resourceful/smart, there was no trace of "social commentary" in this book. I think this is how "strong female characters" are supposed to be written.
The story is self-contained, but it starts somewhere after the start of "Light of the Jedi", and ends at the same time as that book. The events are concurrent, but you will benefit from reading Light first. And I can't leave this without mentioning the action, force use, and Jedi talk that is present in the entire book. It really is an entertaining (to say the least) listen.

That is my review. I hope this encourages the hesitant to click that purchase button and give it a shot.

Emotionally draining read

This one really takes it out of you. I found myself waiting until the end when I was about halfway through. And the end does not leave you satisfied. I know that it is real life, it is a blend of an intensely traumatizing childhood with some questionable decision-making and frustrating developments. Doesn't make the book any easier to get through. A very shocking upbringing with some hopefulness sprinkled throughout. My rating is reflective of my reactions to each part of the story. Yes, I think it is a great book. No, I won't be reading it again.
