In December 2010 residents of Kalimpong, a town on the Indian border with Tibet, turned out en masse to welcome the Dalai Lama. It was only then they realized for the first time that the neighbor they knew as the noodle maker of Kalimpong was also the Dalai Lama's older brother. The Tibetan spiritual leader had come to visit the Gaden Tharpa Choling monastery and join his brother for lunch in the family compound.

Would be better to read the book...

An interesting account from one particular point of view. The author lived through and participated in the key events so there is much of interest here, however, the content is presented from his point of view only. The remarks at the end by Anne Thurston are helpful. What is totally unacceptable is the narrator Lane Nishikawa. He is an awful narrator, so bad that it makes it difficult to get through the whole book. He mispronounces "rinpoche" every single time; he emphasizes the wrong word in virtually every sentence. It is grating to listen to him. Buy the book or borrow it from a library!

at first I thought that this would be another predictable mystery and romance book and debated sticking with it. But..... the plot twists seem to lead one way only to turn in another direction, repeatedly, in a very clever way defeating the listener's attempt at guessing the ending... until the end... Well done. It became a fun listen.

The narration was so bad that it was painful and very distracting from the substance of the story. The accents and voices were contrived; the sentence emphases, misplaced. I think that reading the book would be a better experience. It is an interesting story.

Would you say that listening to this book was time well-spent? Why or why not?
No. It could have been a great read but the voice of the narrator is most irritating.
How did the narrator detract from the book?
The narrator is awful. She doesn't read well, her intonations are off, and her voice is like a school teacher's talking to a 4 year old.
Any additional comments?
I wish I had bought the book rather the narration.

Fabulous story with excellent narration. It will keep you wanting to listen. The characters are well defined but what keeps you glued to story is the details about elephants. Amazing.
