Historia
What does it mean to mourn today, in a culture that has largely set aside rituals that acknowledge grief? After her mother died of cancer at the age of 55, Meghan O'Rourke found that nothing had prepared her for the intensity of her sorrow. In the first anguished days, she began to create a record of her interior life as a mourner, trying to capture the paradox of grief - an endeavor that ultimately bloomed into a profound look at how caring for her mother during her illness changed and strengthened their bond.

On loss of a mother
Revisado: 02-20-25
A beautiful account of a relationship between mother and daughter that continually had me thinking about my own loving yet flawed mom. Even more poignantly it has been a call to reexamine my own mothering to my young children. A universal story of loss and what it means to learn how to mother oneself.

Historia
In the winter of 2009, Rachel Cusk’s marriage of 10 years came to an end. Candid and revelatory, Aftermath chronicles the perilous journey as the author redefines herself and creates a new version of family life for her daughters. She discovers previously unknown strengths and freedoms, but also finds herself suddenly vulnerable to outsiders, unwelcome advice, social displacement, and the absence of a clear authority. The pressure to reconstruct a “normal” life for her daughters competes with the sense that nothing feels normal at all.

Brilliant and searing
Revisado: 05-19-23
The language is precise, unsentimental and lucid. No one is better than Cusk at getting at the heart of female experience.

Historia
Connell and Marianne grew up in the same small town, but the similarities end there. At school, Connell is popular and well liked, while Marianne is a loner. But when the two strike up a conversation - awkward but electrifying - something life changing begins. A year later, they’re both studying at Trinity College in Dublin. Marianne has found her feet in a new social world while Connell hangs at the sidelines, shy and uncertain. Throughout their years at university, Marianne and Connell circle one another.

Delicate and incisive
Revisado: 10-03-21
Rooney’s prose is searing in its simplicity and emotional power. I found this book totally engrossing, take me out of my reality, age, and maternal exhaustion and transmitting me to another universe. The reading is also wonderful.
