Historia
Sarah Churchwell examines one of the most enduringly popular stories of all time, Gone with the Wind, to help explain the divisions ripping the United States apart today. Separating fact from fiction, she shows how histories of mythmaking have informed America's racial and gender politics, the controversies over Confederate statues, the resurgence of white nationalism, the Black Lives Matter movement, the enduring power of the American Dream, and the violence of Trumpism.

Insightful Masterpiece!
Revisado: 10-08-24
This is a well-written, well-researched and thorough exploration of not only the cultural travesty “Gone With the Wind’s” huge popularity presented for its own time, but also for our own.
Mitchell’s novel was a celebration of the Lost Cause myth in every aspect—it’s rewritten history, racism, patriarchy and twisted morality in defense of a way life centered on exploitation, cruelty and theft. No amount of romanticized storytelling can expunge from the book or movie from the fascist ideals they truly support.
And now, here we are again! Churchwell deftly moves from the past to the present (MAGA, Trump)—back and forth—weaving an intricate tapestry of literary, cultural, historical and political analysis that is essential reading for lovers of the written word, democracy, and the human race. Thank you, Sarah!!

One of the Best
Revisado: 01-06-22
This is one of the best books I’ve read on either mindfulness or addiction, and I’ve read many in both genres—especially addiction. Filled with cutting-edge research and sound science, yet engaging and appropriately personal.
The narration was excellent. I would listen to other books read by this narrator.
I will explore not only this author’s other products, but those of other authors and practitioners he mentions (e.g. Jon Kabat Zinn). This book really makes me want to be my better self!

Historia
Forty years as a 4th generation member of a conservative Presbyterian "church family" didn't count for much when this author's wife had an affair and he sought council from his church shepherds. Robinson tithed his time, his talents, and his money, and church young people ate at his table at least once a week, but when he and his teenaged daughter went to their pastor and board of elders for help, they were branded as despicable liars and turned away. Eventually, even after the truth came out, they were still shown the door.

An excellent read—intelligent, encouraging, thought-provoking and enjoyable. His mixture of personal narrative with sound perspective reinforces what I’ve always known to be true and yet have lost sight of so many times. So glad be home again!!
