Historia
These 12 lectures by Professors Cook and Herzman will give you a rounded, fully informed introduction to the luminous Francis of Assisi and will tell the intellectually and spiritually rewarding story of how his influence has glowed across the centuries.Just who was Assisi? Despite his continuing influence and the fairly ample writings about him that date from his own time, Francis remains somewhat elusive in history. Yet these lectures expertly unlock two sources that are the most revealing and plentiful-written narratives of Francis's life and the images created for Franciscan churches.

Historia
Step back to Christianity's first three centuries to see how it transitioned from the religion of Jesus to a religion about Jesus. How did a single group from among many win the struggle for dominance to establish the beliefs central to the faith, rewrite the history of Christianity's internal conflicts, and produce a canon of sacred texts – the New Testament – that supported its own views?

Historia
"Life changes fast....You sit down to dinner and life as you know it ends." These were among the first words Joan Didion wrote in January 2004. Her daughter was lying unconscious in an intensive care unit, a victim of pneumonia and septic shock. Her husband, John Gregory Dunne, was dead. The night before New Year's Eve, while they were sitting down to dinner, he suffered a massive and fatal coronary. The two had lived and worked side by side for nearly 40 years.

What an experience, brutal and beautiful
Revisado: 10-10-23
I have come to Joan Didion much to late, but still early enough to savor and enjoy, and extend many of her essays to my own scholars in class. This may be the saddest book, but so poignant and moving. It has helped me understand what my wife may be experiencing with the sudden loss of her mom and the long road to understanding the finality, and moving on, catching the next swell.

Historia
The French Revolution casts a long shadow, one that reaches into our own time and influences our debates on freedom, equality, and authority. Yet it remains an elusive, perplexing historical event. Its significance morphs according to the sympathies of the viewer, who may see it as a series of gory tableaux, a regrettable slide into uncontrolled anarchy - or a radical reshaping of the political landscape. In this riveting new book, Ian Davidson provides a fresh look at this vital moment in European history. He reveals how it was an immensely complicated and multifaceted revolution....

Historia
Victor Hugo's tale of injustice, heroism and love follows the fortunes of Jean Valjean, an escaped convict determined to put his criminal past behind him. But his attempts to become a respected member of the community are constantly put under threat: by his own conscience and by the relentless investigations of the dogged Policeman, Javert. It is not simply for himself that Valjean must stay free, however, for he has sworn to protect the baby daughter of Fantine, driven to prostitution by poverty.

What a month! I loved it so much, I read a condensed version when young, but nothing compares to the unabridged original. And the musical I know and love so much just skims the surface and even changes characters, like Eponine. Read and listen!

Historia
A fictional portrayal of an aging revolutionary, this novel is a powerful commentary on the nightmare politics of the troubled 20th century. Born in Hungary in 1905, a defector from the Communist Party in 1938, and then arrested in both Spain and France for his political views, Arthur Koestler writes from a wealth of personal experience.

Outstanding!

Found out about this after reading much from Orwell. And his glowing accounts of this which helped him with 1984. Incredible prose and insight. Utter horror. More than zombies and Dracula. They don’t exist, but leaders like Number 1 and Alternative Facts do exist, and that’s the genuine scare for humanity. This deserves to be 8 on the MLA 100 list. The end was riveting. Beautiful in a way. Great production. All based on the Moscow Trials, as I believe.

A great listen, funny,
Revisado: 02-11-23
It’s typical high jinx and laughs, in longer form, and the accepted comedy of the time, white men in black face, was rather cringy. Bertie does observe how hard it must be fir those who are such complexioned to negotiate in society. Indeed.

Historia
In September 1960, John Steinbeck and his poodle, Charley, embarked on a journey across America, from small towns to growing cities to glorious wilderness oases. Travels with Charley is animated by Steinbeck’s attention to the specific details of the natural world and his sense of how the lives of people are intimately connected to the rhythms of nature—to weather, geography, the cycles of the seasons. His keen ear for the transactions among people is evident, too, as he records the interests and obsessions that preoccupy the Americans he encounters along the way.
